| Doc Text | Cause: In RHEL-9 we have introduced new version of systemd package with update systemd-udevd device manager. Consequence: systemd-udevd in RHEL-9 will assign consistent network devices names to Infiniband interfaces. Workaround (if any): Consistent network devices names can be disabled by adding "net.ifnames=0" option to kernel command line, however, Red Hat strongly discourages this action. Result: In previous versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux the Infiniband interfaces by default were not renamed by user-space and kernel assigned names (e.g. ib0, ib1 ...) were used. Users were advised (https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/8/html-single/configuring_infiniband_and_rdma_networks/index#renaming-ipoib-devices_configuring-the-core-rdma-subsystem) to name interfaces manually and this still applies. Now the default interface names are changed to names selected by systemd-udevd. Details of the naming scheme are described in man 7 systemd.net-naming-scheme manual page. |

Now the default interface names are changed to names selected by systemd-udevd. Details of the naming scheme are described in man 7 systemd.net-naming-scheme manual page. | .The `systemd-udevd` device manager now assigns consistent network device names to InfiniBand interfaces Previously, by default, in versions of {RHEL} 9.2 and earlier, device names have been assigned by the kernel to InfiniBand interfaces such as `ib0`, `ib1`. As a consequence, the `systemd-udevd` in RHEL-9 would assign consistent network devices names to Infiniband interfaces and users had to use a workaround that could be harmful to their network configuration. By adding `net.ifnames=0` option to the kernel command line, users need to rename these interfaces after disabling consistent network device names. Now, `systemd-udevd` assigned names are the default interface names. For details, see `systemd.net-naming-scheme(7)` man page. |

The device manager changes the default names of InfiniBand interfaces to consistent names selected by `systemd-udevd`. You can define custom naming rules for naming InfiniBand interfaces by following the link:https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/8/html-single/configuring_infiniband_and_rdma_networks/index#renaming-ipoib-devices_configuring-the-core-rdma-subsystem[Renaming IPoIB devices] procedure. For more details of the naming scheme, see the `systemd.net-naming-scheme(7)` man page. |
