Comment 12 René 2013-09-17 22:22:02 UTC
Abrt pointed me here. I also observed several X crashes recently. I couldn't locate the source for it since it happened in different apps and I believe mainly when doing Alt-Tab.

Today I disabled SNA and switched back to UXA. Since then I haven't experienced another X crash. Normally X crashed several times per day. This might have been mere chance, but maybe others that have a reproducible issue, can test it.

You can see if SNA is enabled by:

grep SNA /var/log/Xorg.0.log

For me it shows this when enabled:
[ 19855.972] (II) intel(0): SNA initialized with Ivybridge (gen7, gt2) backend

UXA is the default on my system, so I just had to uncomment my custom config in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

HTH,
René

This crash appened unexpectedly while using eclipse. I believe a similar crash has already happened while the screen was locked.

Comment 20 D. Hugh Redelmeier 2013-10-02 21:37:43 UTC
I don't know what triggered the crash. Perhaps I was opening another browser window.

My system had been up for about 6 days and I had been logged into a Gnome desktop for all that time. I had lots of FireFox windows and tabs open, a few xterms, and an xchat. The responsiveness was getting a bit sluggish. THen it just logged me out.

This seems like a bug that I trip over once in a while.

I solved the same problem:
sudo rm /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libGL.so
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libGL.so
The problem was when using libGL.so from mesa, not from fglrx"

core_traceback for another crash

I just had another crash that ABRT thinks is the same as this one. Based on the traceback, I don't think that it is the same.

The original report is for a SIGSEGV in __GI_____strtod_l_internal (changed into a SIGABRT by X's signal handler). This was called from "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/catalyst/libglx.so" so I guess it is "tainted".

My current problem is a SIGSEGV in __memcpy_ssse3_back, called from memcpy, called from exaMemcpyBox. NOTE: I am not using any tainted code. I'm using nouveau.

NOTE: my earlier report (#20) was about a crash on a different computer with a different video card, using the open source RADEON drive. That one crashed in a memcpy that was called from R600UploadToScreenCS.

SUMMARY: I don't think that these are the same problem. But ABRT does.

(Trying to resubmit because it got misclassified.)

This seems like a bug that I trip over once in a while.

core_backtrace from report #20

As described above, I think that this crash is distinct from the original problem. And distinct from the crash reported in #27. This is the crash reported in #20.

Note: this system was running the open source Radeon driver, not the proprietary catalyst driver.

just using F19 desktop. Particular program was kompare. Desktop was getting slower, perhaps because I have a million tabs and windows open in firefox.

Note: the SIGABRT is probably not the real problem. Look down the traceback and see that it is from X's signal handler. The cause of the original signal is more important.

FWIW, I've given up on nouveau and this issue. I installed the Nvidia binary blob a week or two ago and have not looked back.

In fact, installing the Nvidia binary blob on my dual-head machine gave me zaphod heads back again. The nouveau driver seems to have neutered that.

After having my laptop display system crash nearly every day in various ways, sometimes multiples times per day, I finally bit the bullet and switched to the Nvidia driver blob too. So far so good.

Seems to vary. Sometimes multiple apps open and running, sometimes just one.
Appears to only happen when laptop is docked with external monitor.

by turning it on after the last update! I took a picture of the screen when bootup is "stuck" and attached that.

I got it to boot by using the "second" Fedora in the Grub list - I don't remember exactly but it was some sort of recovery and had a bunch of numbers behind it.

Then, as soon as I tried to open Firefox, it rebooted. Then I tried to open Chrome and it rebooted. Glad I noticed Konqueror in the program list - I'm using that now.
This has happened 6 or more times. I'm sorry I don't know enough to tell you more...I hope the rest is in the files.
Thank you!

But with

kernel-3.13.5-200.fc20.x86_64
xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.14.4-6.fc20.x86_64

I'm not having crashes anymore

Comment 49 D. Hugh Redelmeier 2014-04-18 19:47:18 UTC
I am sure that multiple crashes show up in this bz.

My report in #20 is probably the same as https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1029144

For that there seems to be an upstream patch that Fedora has yet to adopt.

In a ssh shell I've attached gdb to a running Xorg and opened an image that crashes with firefox:

Program received signal SIGBUS, Bus error.

My crash had backtrace (twice, about 3 hours apart) - both times when I was switching between X and a VT. X has firefox and other stuff running for a while. Don't know why abrt-applet thinks it should go here:

Running Openshot (the open source video editing program). This program must be triggering some bug. It was clearly Openshot causing Xorg issues.

I've stopped experiencing this problems... for a long time, so I'm updating here.

Another user experienced a similar problem:

I was editing in a image in Photoshop CS2 running under Wine, and moving the mouse or something caused the screen to go black. After a while the login screen appeared, and I logged back in. This issue is likely related to the third-party fglrx drivers, if so please indicate and I will report it to AMD or whoever devlops it if it is an issue.

Comment 56 Fedora End Of Life 2015-01-09 19:40:27 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 19 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 19. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now this bug will
be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '19'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 19 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 57 Fedora End Of Life 2015-02-17 17:00:28 UTC
Fedora 19 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-01-06. Fedora 19 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
