Description Leslie Satenstein 2013-09-16 13:57:53 UTC
Description of problem:

Fedora20 layout has elected to not show the userid in the top right corner.
A person can log in as root, forget he is root, and begin making non-reversable changes.

I support multiple applications via separate login IDs. If I get called away to the phone, and return, I may actually return to the wrong logon id. I may be responding to a client request and forget that root is active, or my current logon is wrong.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

Fedora 20 Alpha

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.

Actual results:

Since you do not wish to show the logon id, (which is in my opinion is an error in thinking), you must somehow (at least for root) by default, use a different wallpaper so that the user knows he is in the administrative session.

Expected results:

Restore the user name to the top right corner.

Additional info:

Try it, yourself

Please do not disable or block the system admin (root) from requesting that logon id's be shown. Recall that anyone with access to the logon can determine the logonid by entering the id command in a virtual terminal.

This package has changed ownership in the Fedora Package Database. Reassigning to the new owner of this component.

Hi Leslie,

Thanks for the idea! I am afraid this might not be the best place to get feedback though -- could you discuss it with the GNOME Design Team instead? https://wiki.gnome.org/Design/ has contact details.

Thanks again!

Sent to Gnome.

I am somewhat disappointed with Fedora and division of responsibilities.
Fedora has, via RH, sponsored Gnome as the default DE. Therefore Fedora must take responsibility for Gnome, as it does for anaconda, or the dynamic firewall or btrfs. Fedora without Gnome is viable, but here again, Fedora directs problems with interfaces away to the DE. We have to become members of those application development platforms.

Fedora must decide to accept kde and gnome as two supported DE's, and if not, do not include these two in anaconda.

I am testing F20, and why do I have to complain separately to GNOME. Find a way to forward bugzilla registrations to themĀ. Think about it, Fedora accepts responsibility for Grub2.
