Description Chuck Lasher 2013-11-04 05:22:34 UTC
Description of problem:
Update of 03-Nov-2013 (was 'current' until this date) installed abrt updates + firmware (?). Post installation, "ath: phy0:" error messages streaming into system message log (viewable with 'dmesg') continuously. Disabling wifi does not quiet error reporting.

2Ghz is connectable but with error streaming. 5Ghz is not connectable.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:
install current version, enable wifi and attempt to connect to wifi (2 or 5 Ghz).

Steps to Reproduce:
1. install current updates as of 03-Nov-2013 and boot existing config using 5 Ghz network.
2. open back side tty (tty2, etc)
3. log in.
4. Errors start streaming as soon as logged in.

Actual results: (sample cut/paste from message log)
[17770.855258] ath: phy0: Failed to wakeup in 500us
[17770.966496] ath: phy0: RX failed to go idle in 10 ms RXSM=0xffffffff
[17770.977603] ath: phy0: DMA failed to stop in 10 ms AR_CR=0xffffffff AR_DIAG_SW=0xffffffff DMADBG_7=
0xffffffff

streamed nearly continuously down every active tty login session.

System is 'jumpy' post installation of updates (keyboard input at gnome desktop and other ttys noticably delayed before echoing.

Expected results: No such errors reported prior to this update.

Additional info: Submitter will be happy to provide whatever is needed (including full package install list). Submitter uncertain what to include at time of bug report.

Comment 1 Chuck Lasher 2013-11-04 05:26:10 UTC
Submitter uncertain if actual cause is 9170 firmware. attempt to comb through for exact package name. assistance assisted.

Comment 3 Michele Baldessari 2013-11-16 20:59:43 UTC
Hi Chuck,

a few questions:
- Can you please give us the output of 'ethtool -i ath0'? (I assume that is the
name of the interface

- Can you also give us the output of 'lspci -v -n'

- Can you give us the exact kernel versions (via the 'uname -a' command) in which
the card worked and the versions in which the card does not work?

Thanks,
Michele

Comment 4 Chuck Lasher 2013-11-16 21:43:41 UTC
Michele,

I am currently booted with kernel: 3.11.7-200.fc19.x86_64 and can verify it now only works at 2.4 Ghz. It cannot even find the 5 Ghz network.

The oldest kernel I have here now (thanks to updates) is 3.11.6-200.fc19.x86_64 and it does not work for any of my current 3. It worked for me prior to these versions. I'm trying to recall which is the last working version. It most likely is the kernel which was 'current' as of Oct 25. My automatic update (all default settings) ran on the 2nd/3rd and that is where I discovered the problem. I am certain it works in at least one of the 3.10 and 3.9 kernels and wish I had it here to provide the exact version info. I know it works in the version of the kernel on my September distro DVD iso. I can boot that using an external drive if you wish also. If there is a way I can obtain the older kernel revs, I will install them and verify where it works and where it doesn't for you.

'ethtool -i ath0' now gives no results. Nor does wlan0 (a previous/old name).
It does show up, with very minimal data, as 'wlp7s0' and yields:

[chuck@Lizum /etc]# ethtool -i wlp7s0
driver: ath9k
version: 3.11.7-200.fc19.x86_64
firmware-version: N/A
bus-info: 0000:07:00.0
supports-statistics: yes
supports-test: no
supports-eeprom-access: no
supports-register-dump: no
supports-priv-flags: no
[chuck@Lizum /etc]#

Subsequently, 'lspci -v -n' yields:

Thanks Chuck, this gives us a bit more context.

You can always find all the kernels built for Fedora on koji.fedoraproject.org:
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=8

As a quick try, you could give the very latest kernel a shot:
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=478832

Note that this is a very experimental kernel with a lot of debugging output
which will make it slower. But for a quick test it's ok.
You could try downloading kernel-3...x86_64 and add it to your list of kernels via 'rpm -ivh kernel-3..'

If you can boot successfully in the above kernel you could check if
the issue has already been fixed upstream.

If it fixes it we know that upstream has already tackled the issue. If it does
not we will need to raise it upstream.

hth,
Michele

Comment 6 Chuck Lasher 2013-11-24 02:16:15 UTC
Michele,
I don't know why I didn't bother to check this before but I clearly didn't else I'd have reported it straight away.

With the wifi connected, claiming: "Signal Strength Good, Link speed 54 Mb/s, Security WPA2, IP: .. " in Network Manager's GUI, the *measured* throughput on the 2.4 Ghz link attempting to copy a file yields some interesting fluctuations from 100KB/sec -> 990 KB/sec (~1-8 Mb/s) with it staying at the 1Mbit rate (very close to) most of the time.

That appears something is misidentified isn't it? Interesting?

Chuck

Comment 7 Michele Baldessari 2013-12-25 18:36:32 UTC
Well throughput on Wireless networks is always a mix of marketing and real-life fluctuations. It might very well be that something is misidentified (at NM level, driver level, etc) but we'd need an extremely simple and reproduceable testcase to prove it/investigate further.

So with the latest 3.12.x kernels, what issues besides throughput measurements are still open with ath0?

Comment 8 Chuck Lasher 2013-12-25 19:13:20 UTC
With the latest 3.12.x kernels, specifically 3.12.5-200.fc19.x86_64, there are multiple, easily recreatable and testable issues.

My supporting hardware:
Netgear D6200 (802.11ac on both 2.4 and 5Ghz) -or- Apple Airport Extreme (2.4 and 5 Ghz with 300n)
Synology NAS (4x 1GB wired ethernet supplying data to feed the wifi)

I boot this computer on Windows 7 64-bit professional and pull a file from the NAS (copy). Open browser (shared directory on NAS) and browse for file, copy to desktop, done. No fuss.

Boot this same computer on this kernel and a) can only find the 2.4G network b) can't even see the 5G network.

Copying the same file from the NAS either runs at 1-4 KB/sec or simply fails to start. (nautilus copy)

To summarize, is this issue still open? YES. I booted the August/September Installation DVD (i made from the ISO). It works!

Comment 9 Michele Baldessari 2013-12-25 20:06:45 UTC
Hi Chuck,

ok. Can we try the following please:
1) echo "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" > /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
rmmod ath9k (or reboot)
and modprobe ath9k

Does the performance issue still persist?

2) If 1) changed nothing, does the following help the performance issue?
iwconfig ath0 power off
iw dev ath0 set power_save off

Thanks,
Michele

Comment 10 Chuck Lasher 2013-12-25 20:41:01 UTC
Hi Michelle,

Ok, status report.

Step 1:

a. file /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf did not exist. Created it.
b. rmmod ath9k and modprobe ath9k done ok.

Performance on empty wifi (everything else physically powered off), LOS 3 feet (1m) from router: 1.4MB/sec (nautilus) sustained, steady. That is a slight improvement since it wasn't down in the KB range but it's not been running long either.

Step 2:

a. iwconfig and iw could not find ath0.

b. device ath0 listed as 'wlp7s0'
c. issued power off command via iw with substituted name
d. attempt to set power_save failed (no such device)

Comment 11 Michele Baldessari 2013-12-26 17:18:52 UTC
Hi Chuck,

well it's some form of progress ;)

Ok so adding "nohwcrypt=1" at least brings the speed from KB/sec range to ~1.4MB/sec.

I believe Step 2 failed due to the name of the device (0 vs o). If you do:
iwconfig wlp7s0 power off
iw dev wlp7s0 power_save off

and then launch 'iwconfig' you should be able to verify that power management
is off with the line:
Power Management:off

Can you retry step 2 and report what speeds you get?

Also during the tests, do you get any messages in /var/log/messages? If yes,
could you upload it here?

As a side note there are some commits in 3.13 for ath9k which seem to affect this specific chipset:
* 2d22c7d - (2013-11-11 14:47:45 -0500)  ath9k: Use correct PCIE initvals for AR9485 <Sujith Manoharan>
* 7c9a720 - (2013-09-26 15:13:31 -0400)  ath9k: Update AR9485 1.1 initvals <Sujith Manoharan>

Let's try step 2 and then if things are still no good, we can give the above
commits a shot.

Thanks and regards,
Michele

Michele,
I did see my typo *immediately* after I clicked it (and felt like an idiot)

I confirm the atheros has power management turned off.

iwconfig does confirm

          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=70/70 Signal level=-39 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:12 Invalid misc:30 Missed beacon:0

which is what we expect.

Aside from the other normal messages the log, the only entries for wlp7s0, which look normal to me are (using 'cat messages | grep wlp7s0 > /tmp/wlp7s0.log'):

Hi Chuck,

no worries, I was just making sure we were 100% on the same page ;)

So to recap:
- We still have the 2.4Ghz vs 5Ghz issue
Can you post here the output of 'iwlist scan' please?

- Adding nohwcrypt=1 to the module's parameters brought the throughput from a few
  KB/sec to ~1.5Mbit/s
- Also setting the power save functionality to off brought it up to ~4Mbit/s

Is the above roughly correct?

There were some changes in the TCP stack for bufferbloat which interacted
badly with certain drivers and made performance suffer. This could be an
explanation for the fact you did not see this issue with previous Fedora
versions. I'll need to dig up the whole story on this.

Btw. I recommend you do the performance tests with an ftp client or with
specialized tools (like iperf or netperf). In my experience nautilus is not
as performant due to GIO and is not a good candidate for baselining network
performance.

regards,
Michele

Hi Chuck,

so the patch I had in mind has already made it in since 3.12.4:
* f4a5ec1 - (2013-12-08 07:29:12 -0800)  tcp: tsq: restore minimal amount of queueing <Eric Dumazet>

You are testing via 3.12.5 so that does not apply here.

I'd give 3.12.6 also a shot as there are some fixes that could be relevant:
* 7f79e50 - (2013-12-20 07:48:58 -0800)  ath9k: fix duration calculation for non-aggregated packets <Felix Fietkau>
* 1c8eac0 - (2013-12-20 07:48:58 -0800)  ath9k: Fix XLNA bias strength <Sujith Manoharan>
* 4edfe34 - (2013-12-20 07:48:58 -0800)  ath9k: Fix QuickDrop usage <Sujith Manoharan>
* ec30326 - (2013-10-07 13:34:43 -0400)  ath9k: fix tx queue scheduling after channel changes <Felix Fietkau>

If that still brings no improvements, I'd give 3.13-rc a shot, just to see if
things have been fixed there. I'm out of ideas after that :/

Michele,
We have one very stubborn adapter on our hands. I downloaded the rpms from koji and installed them (kernel, kernel-modules-extra, and kernel-headers to make DKMS happy).

I enabled the adapter, watched it connect to the 2.4 Ghz net. It still refused to find the 5 Ghz network. The reported speed for 2.4Ghz '300n' in NetworkManager was 120 Mbps.

I ran with it and the wired adapter on for a few minutes to give it settling time (something it seems to need).

When I disabled the wired adapter ALL lan traffic to local hosts via direct ip plus simple DNS host resolution through the router, failed. Even a simple 'df' (which has to nfs mounts listed) failed to display anything.

I enabled the wired adapter, expecting it to return, but it didn't. Either the resolver had gone into very long timeouts already or something wasn't right.

I removed 3.12.6 and rebooted. Normal operation restored.

I will wait trying 3.13-rc until you've had time to ponder.

The AR9485 card that you have is 2.4 Ghz only - it is not a dual-band card and doesn't support 5 Ghz.

Please remove the "nohwcrypt" option:
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/ath9k/bugs#Common_Misconceptions

Can you attach the output of "sudo lspci -vv" ? Also, 3.12.6 is the latest stable release, can you try it ?

Comment 20 Chuck Lasher 2014-01-08 05:02:36 UTC
I am running 3.12.6 as it arrived yesterday in the updates. For confirmation, I have 3.12.6-200.fc19.x86_64 installed and running as the default kernel.

I have completely disabled the wireless in 3.12.6 as it interferes with ALL dnslookup activity (p2p1 or wlp7s0) (dns lookup failures). 3.12.6 is less compatible with this adapter than 3.12.5 in that regard.

Here is the lspci -vv you requested.

*********** MASS BUG UPDATE **************

We apologize for the inconvenience. There is a large number of bugs to go through and several of them have gone stale. Due to this, we are doing a mass bug update across all of the Fedora 19 kernel bugs.

Fedora 19 has now been rebased to 3.13.5-100.fc19. Please test this kernel update and let us know if you issue has been resolved or if it is still present with the newer kernel.

If you experience different issues, please open a new bug report for those.
