Description Phil! Gold 2013-12-18 20:58:48 UTC
Description of problem:

I have a system with about 3000 user accounts (all in /etc/passwd). When I use the LightDM GTK greeter (with `greeter-hide-users=true`), as soon as focus leaves the username entry box the greeter freezes for about ten seconds.

In case it makes a difference, I'm using AccountsService and all of the accounts have their home directories on NFS (but I get the same behavior when /home is not mounted at all).

I'm using AccountsService, and here's my /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf:

    [LightDM]
    minimum-vt=1
    user-authority-in-system-dir=true

    [SeatDefaults]
    xserver-command=X -background none
    greeter-session=lightdm-gtk-greeter
    greeter-hide-users=true
    greeter-show-manual-login=true
    user-session=mate
    allow-guest=false
    session-wrapper=/etc/X11/xinit/Xsession

    [XDMCPServer]
    enabled=false

    [VNCServer]
    enabled=false

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

lightdm-1.8.5-2.fc20.x86_64
lightdm-gtk-1.6.1-2.fc20.x86_64
accountsservice-0.6.35-3.fc20.x86_64

How reproducible:

It happens the first time focus leaves the username box after the greeter is launched, but it happens *every* time a new greeter is launched.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Set up system with 3000 user accounts.
2. Start LightDM with above lightdm.conf.
3. Type at least one character into the username field.
4. Cause focus to go elsewhere (press tab, click on the password field, etc.)

Actual results:

For about ten seconds, the focus highlight remains on the username field and the greeter becomes unresponsive (keypresses do nothing; the mouse cursor moves but clicks on UI elements, including the menus in the screen corner, do nothing). After about ten seconds, focus shifts to the password field and the greeter UI reacts normally to events.

Expected results:

Focus should shift to the password field without any noticeable delay so that the person can begin typing their password immediately.

Comment 1 Fedora End Of Life 2015-05-29 10:02:19 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 20 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 20. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '20'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 20 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 2 Fedora End Of Life 2015-06-29 13:36:13 UTC
Fedora 20 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-06-23. Fedora 20 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
