Description Ma Hsiao-chun 2013-12-19 07:24:20 UTC
gnome-shell is advertised as a compiz alternative in release note:
https://access.redhat.com/site/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/7-Beta/html-single/7.0_Release_Notes/index.html#removed-packages

Does it support 3D effects like 3D cube?

Does it support non-GNOME environment, e.g., KDE?

IIUC, both answers are No.
Therefore, I don't it can be justified as an alternative.
"None" is probably more correct.

I don't 'advertised' accurately describes the content of that table.
But the fact remains that compiz was a compositing window manager in rhel6, and gnome-shell is a compositing window manger in rhel7
