Description of problem:
I'm not sure if this is an installer, Documentation or upgrade bug. 

I think it should be a Doc bug or Release Note to say this is supported and to point to kbase article.

Red Hat Satellite 5.6: How to migrate from an Embedded to a Managed Database and vice versa

This is fully supported, but it was released after 5.6 GA'd, so has no mention within 5.6 documentation/product release.
