Another user experienced a similar problem:

After exiting MATE (logout user).
Enter Gnome (login user) and ownCloud client write error (ownCloud client required panel).
Only black screen is displayed. Shortcuts work.

Compiz doesn't work with gnome, btw. gnome-shell needs mutter as windows-manager.

can you describe a little more detailed what happend?
Did this issue occurs frequently ?
