Description of problem:
This was after vim reported that it was out of memory during a search/replace on a large file.

I had an ~1.5GB log file loaded, having forgotten that I'd ulimit'd everything to about 2GB and did a 

:%s/ *$//

After a while vim reported it was out of memory (something like 'error allocating memory 9036 bytes') and
appeared to be sitting at a prompt, so I hit return expecting it to quit, at which point it seg'd - so I guess
a missing check somewhere.
