Another user experienced a similar problem:

I had the chrome brower open. I was not doing anything with the desktop or mate panel.

my desktop

I am not doing anything special when it crashes. Often I am just running chrome, and I get the alert that something crashed. I use Mate because I have a laptop with a wide screen, and for programming, I like to have a window the full height of the screen and the desktop's panel or tool bar on the right edge of the screen, and I like to be able to switch quickly between a large number of work spaces. Other desktops that I tried force a tool bar at the top of the screen or don't have a way to redefine the keys to switch work spaces. I am on Fedora 20 now, but when I installed Fedora 17, I tried all of the desktops it included, and Mate was the only one that did what I needed. My thanks to everyone who worked on it.
In any case, I do not browse in caja or dump files on the desktop or go through menus on the panel.
I have attached a screen capture of my desktop.
The only thing that makes my desktop special are the "No mail" and "Backlight 7%" lines on the panel. They are from a mail check applet and a brightness applet that I wrote for gnome-2.32.0-fc14 and then ported to mate-1.4.1-fc17 and mate-1.6.2-fc20.

I forgot to add that the crash happens about once a week.
