Description of problem:

The latest version (as of 07/23/14) of java-1.7.0-oracle-plugin for RHEL5 does not work under RHEL5, as it appears that it was compiled/linked against a version of GLIBC that is not compatible with RHEL5.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.yum install firefox java-1.7.0-oracle java-1.7.0-oracle-plugin
2. firefox


Actual results:

$ firefox LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.7.0-oracle-1.7.0.65.x86_64/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so [/usr/lib64/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.7.0-oracle-1.7.0.65.x86_64/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so)]

Expected results:

Firefox successfully loads the java plugin

Additional info:

I realize that Oracle java is technically unsupported by Red Hat, but it's silly to have a package in a RHEL5 software channel that does not actually work in RHEL5.  If the resources are not available to rebuild the package then it would probably be best to remove java-1.7.0-oracle-plugin from the RHEL5 "third-party-oracle" software channel all together and issue a statement saying that it will no longer be available.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 shipped it's last minor release, 5.11, on September 14th, 2014. On March 31st, 2017 RHEL 5 exited Production Phase 3 and entered Extended Life Phase. For RHEL releases in the Extended Life Phase, Red Hat  will provide limited ongoing technical support. No bug fixes, security fixes, hardware enablement or root-cause analysis will be available during this phase, and support will be provided on existing installations only.  If the customer purchases the Extended Life-cycle Support (ELS), certain critical-impact security fixes and selected urgent priority bug fixes for the last minor release will be provided.
