Description Corey Welton 2014-08-15 15:43:58 UTC
Description of problem:

I think we need to clean up the way Audit works -- at very least in Templates, perhaps other places.

When I make changes to a template that are not "edits", per se -- a name change, or toggle the snippet flag, etc -- these changes do not show up in the Template's "History" tab. The only thing that shows up in the History tabs are any changes/diffs I make to the actual script content itself.

This same diff is available in the larger Monitor > Audit tab.

Secondly, when I make a change such as a rename, i.e., "test template" -> "test template 2", we don't see a direct A->B relationship in the Audit tab.

Admin (10.10.54.220) updated Config Template: test template2

Here, I have no clear indication "what" was renamed to "test template 2" If users are changing/maintaining/renaming a bunch of templates all the time, it could get confusing as to what what actually changed.

In general, the entire experience of viewing audit history feels somewhat confusing. Thus, I'm proposing a few changes, or at least something to base a redesign on:

1. Seeing as the History contents/diffs for any template change appear in the larger Audit, we should be able to do a pivot of sorts, and drill down into that feature's changes, or even that particular template, displaying all of them in the History tab.

2. Provide greater detail in the global Audit trail, giving a brief detail as to what was changed (showing direct relationship between changes), while retaining ability to click through and drill down deeper into the details if desired.

3. Any other places in the UI that have their own "History" tabs (if/when they exist, I dunno offhand) should be able to filter/display all Audit changes relevant to that sub system. Basically, we maintain the larger audit view while providing users ability to drill down into relevant changes within the subsystem itself.

a quick note regarding:

It is true that user can click through the link ("test template 2") to see what was renamed. But users won't want do have to do that - they'll want to know immediately "what" was changed to "what else".

This is an older bug which I do not envision being addressed in the near term. I am closing this out. If you believe doing so is an issue, please feel free to re-open and provide additional business information. Thank you.
