Description Vered Volansky 2014-09-02 06:34:40 UTC
We saw two issues in bz1074346:
http://documentation-devel.engineering.redhat.com/site/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Virtualization/3.5-Beta/html-single/Administration_Guide/index.html#Read_Only_Disks_in_Red_Hat_Enterprise_Virtualization

> > Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization allows you to mark virtual machine hard
> > disks as Read Only and attach those disks to virtual machines.

The disk is not read-only, it's a ATTACHED as read only to a VM.
maybe something like:
"Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization allows you to mark virtual machine hard
disks as Read Only when attached to virtual machines."

> > Floating disks are always rewritable and cannot be marked read-only.
This is not wrong, but it's important to clarify that RO is a property of the VM-Disk relationship. A floating disk is not attached to a VM, and therefore cannot ever be RO. We don't want customer to expect to be able to edit this property on floating disk in the future.

Just to clarify - this isn't a request to reopen bz1074346 - the fix there is fine.
While examining it, though, additional (pre-exsiting) issues were noticed.

Hi Vered,
   Thanks for filing this bug.
I have made the following changes:
"Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization allows you to mark a virtual machine hard disk as Read Only when attaching the hard disk to a virtual machine."

"Floating disks are not attached to a virtual machine and cannot be marked read-only."

Can you let me know if this is now clear enough and let me know if you have further feedback.

Many thanks,
Julie

Hi Julie,

The import thing to clarify here is that read-only or read-write is not an intrinsic property of the disk, but of how it's *attached to the vm*. The given paragraph may be misunderstood a meaning that the disk becomes read-only when attached to a VM. Perhaps an extra clarification would be beneficial? Something down the lines of:

"""
Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization allows you to mark a virtual machine hard disk as read-only when attaching the hard disk to a virtual machine - on that virtual machine. The disk may still be attached as read-write on other virtual machines.
"""
