Description Matt Reid 2014-10-15 20:25:04 UTC
Description of problem:
Most of the time, when I go to log into RHEV, it tells me that:

"This Browser version isn't optimal for displaying the application graphics (refer to Documentation for details)"

I finally gave in and decided I wanted to know which versions were supported, and tried to look in "Documentation".

Closest thing I could find from the Admin Guide:
"22.1.5. Jasper Reports System Requirements
The Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Manager Reports tool supports the following browsers:

In Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.7 - Firefox 17 or later
In Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 - Firefox 17 or later
    In Windows 7 - Internet Explorer 9
In Windows Server 2008 - Internet Explorer 9"

Closest thing from the Technical Guide:
"More information on the actions available from the User Portal as well as supported browsers and clients can be found in the User Guide."

In the User Guide, none of the 8 mentions of Firefox talk about which versions are supported. None of the 9 mentions of "supported" take me to a relevant section talking about which browser versions are supported by the Admin Portal. The Technical Guide made it sound like I could find that information here.

Found something useful in the Installation Guide:
"1.2.4. Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Manager Client Requirements
Use a client with a supported web browser to access the Administration Portal, and the User Portal. The portals support the following clients and browsers:

Mozilla Firefox 17, and later, on Red Hat Enterprise Linux is required to access both portals.
Internet Explorer 8, and later, on Microsoft Windows is required to access the User Portal. Use the desktop version, not the touchscreen version of Internet Explorer 10.
Internet Explorer 9, and later, on Microsoft Windows is required to access the Administration Portal. Use the desktop version, not the touchscreen version of Internet Explorer 10."

However, I'm not sure how to interpret those statements. I tried FF32 on Fedora 20, which is later than FF 17, but that still said it wasn't optimal.

I tried FF24 on RHEL 7, which is later than RHEL 5 & 6, and later than FF17, and that said it wasn't optimal.

I tried Chrome37 on F20, and that wasn't optimal.

Finally, I tried FF17 on RHEL 6.5, and it was happy with that.

What are the targeted browser versions for support? Is that documented clearly somewhere? The Install Guide has a bit of that info, but that's not where I would expect to see it, and doesn't seem like it should be the only place. The information it has is also somewhat confusing, from that description, I would expect more of my browser and operating system combinations to show as supported.

If we're leaving that sort of information to the documentation, couldn't we say in the error string which doc they could find that information in? There are 5 guides, and a few additional docs of notes within RHEV 3.4, I'd rather not dig through several trying to find that information. Maybe compatibility information is better served in a kbase than trying to maintain it in the docs?

documentation for admin-portal-supported clients is inaccurate and should be updated to:

In Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x - Firefox 31 [??? not sure if FF31 was pushed to RHEL 5.x; if not - this line should be *removed*]
In Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 - Firefox 31
In Windows 7 - Internet Explorer 9 or later
In Windows Server 2008 - Internet Explorer 9 or later

should also be updated in RHEV 3.4 docs, flagging as a 3.4.z candidate.
