Description Istvan Cebrian 2015-04-28 11:44:28 UTC
Description of problem:

Currently on Satellite 6 Debian is not supported, however, many clients who demonstrate interest in Satellite typical also always have one other question "If all features are supported on all Linux distributions" which currently are not.

Clients primary concerns are typically related to Debian systems which are also very wide-spread. Satellite 6 only support Debian in what regards Provisioning and Configuration Management.

It would be very interesting to bring Debian support for Content, Lifecycle and Repository management to Satellite 6 and I beleive it would further help push Satellite 6 out to customers.

Possible avenues:

1. Integrate project such as Aptly into Pulp or Katello or Foreman (http://www.aptly.info/)

2. Further develop support for DEB in Pulp via projecto "pulp_deb" at https://github.com/pulp/pulp_deb

Would be available to assist in any testing if necessary.

Since this issue was entered in Red Hat Bugzilla, the release flag has been
set to ? to ensure that it is properly evaluated for this release.

Another vote for developing support to manage other Linux distros (Debian / Ubuntu) so we have a single pane of glass to manage all our platforms. Central IT orgs don't get to always dictate the distro our customers want, but we can dictate the tool that we use to manage them. Having a single management platform that supports multiple Linux distro families is a selling point of Satellite pulp / kotello can be updated do it.

The capabilities to manage Debian systems are available in the upstream. We have no intention at this time to productize and support Debian in Red Hat Satellite.

What is Red Hat's Satellite support policy regarding customers loading these upstream capabilities into the Red Hat provided Satellite system to grant themselves this capability.

Redhat: You are shooting yourselves in the foot on this one.
I second everything in Comment 7.
We pay for Satellite, yet I now have to come up with some other solution for Debian installs provided by vendors. This reduces the usefulness of Satellite and causes me to wonder why I don't just use Foreman/Katello instead.
