The conf file says pidfile is optional, but it is not, because the unit file expects it in a specific place that is not the hard-coded default

# systemctl show zabbix-agent.service |grep -i pid
PIDFile=/run/zabbix/zabbix_agentd.pid

Documented default location is /tmp
