Description Panos Kavalagios 2015-06-02 07:02:05 UTC

Xorg.0.log

Description of problem: After upgraded to Fedora 22 and KDE 5, the monitor displays horizontal lines and the display is corrupted.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.99.917-10.20150526.fc22.x86_64

How reproducible: Log in to KDE and navigate for a while.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Log in to KDE from KDM
2. Use the system for a while
3.

Actual results: The display is getting corrupted with the following dmesg:
[53287.708030] [drm] stuck on render ring
[53287.710120] [drm] GPU HANG: ecode 3:0:0x7ee6ffc1, in Xorg [769], reason: Ring hung, action: reset
[53287.710125] [drm] GPU hangs can indicate a bug anywhere in the entire gfx stack, including userspace.
[53287.710128] [drm] Please file a _new_ bug report on bugs.freedesktop.org against DRI -> DRM/Intel
[53287.710130] [drm] drm/i915 developers can then reassign to the right component if it's not a kernel issue.
[53287.710133] [drm] The gpu crash dump is required to analyze gpu hangs, so please always attach it.
[53287.710136] [drm] GPU crash dump saved to /sys/class/drm/card0/error
[53287.740091] drm/i915: Resetting chip after gpu hang

Expected results: The display should have no issue like previous KDE 4 and Fedora 21.

Additional info: The error of /sys/class/drm/card0/error and the /var/log/Xorg.0.log is attached.

Comment 1 Panos Kavalagios 2015-06-02 07:13:50 UTC
I cannot add the attachment /sys/class/drm/card0/error due to error in the Bugzilla. I can mail it over.

Anyway, I would appreciate a workaround. It is very irritating and it happens very often.

Comment 4 Dave Airlie 2015-06-02 23:34:42 UTC
okay that's no good, dnf distro-sync xorg-x11-drv-intel should return you the upstream one.

I've got a test kernel that might work better,

https://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org/scratch/airlied/task_9915290/

it disables a feature of the i915 kernel driver that is possibly causing the problems.

Comment 5 Panos Kavalagios 2015-06-03 15:21:54 UTC
The system is already distro-sync'd. I have tested your test kernel:

root@bb229:[203] ~ # uname -a
Linux bb229 4.0.4-303.bz1227202.fc22.x86_64 #1 SMP Tue Jun 2 09:46:50 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

and it seems to work fine so far.

One remark: remember to increase the version number. It is more convenient that dnf can install it as an update from a local repository and grub2-mkconfig can make it default. Currently the latest default 4.0.4-303.fc22 > 4.0.4-303.bz1227202.fc22.

Is there any luck for us having integrated Intel graphics and especially for me working with an ancient model?

Comment 6 Panos Kavalagios 2015-06-04 07:20:22 UTC
A workaround to stick to the testing kernel until a solution is found:

# echo 'exclude=kernel-*' >> /etc/dnf/dnf.conf

It will ignore all future kernel updates.

Comment 7 Panos Kavalagios 2015-06-26 08:33:45 UTC
I have tested the latest kernel-4.0.5-300.fc22.x86_64 and it seems to work fine so far. Is it possible to assign it to the kernel team in order to provide more information about the resolution?

Comment 8 Fedora End Of Life 2016-07-19 18:53:52 UTC
Fedora 22 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2016-07-19. Fedora 22 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
