An initial draft documentation for backing up and restoring Hosted Engine has been written here: http://www.ovirt.org/OVirt_Hosted_Engine_Backup_and_Restore

The procedure is still under verification.

the procedure "Application backup / restore" written in http://www.ovirt.org/OVirt_Hosted_Engine_Backup_and_Restore has been successfully tested on NFSv3 with 2 hosts.

Andrew please let me know if any more info is needed on my side.

Hi Sandro,

Thank you for the needinfo request.

We are working on the documentation now, and will let you know if we have any questions along the way.

I have passed on the link to the writers as well.

Kind regards,

Andrew

Hello Takahashi-san,
(Sorry for delay, I didn't realise there was mid-air collision of comments)

As discussed over IRC, after discussion with engineering we will try new workflow involving two hosted-engine (3.4) hosts with some additional running VMs.

The workflow I will be testing:
1. Place host2 into maintenance so that all VMs are running on host1
2. Run engine-backup and copy the files to a remote server
3. Reinstall host2 and deploy hosted-engine setup
4. Install Manager on VM, restore backup
5. Remove host2 from Manager
6. Complete deployment of host2
7. VMs can then be hosted on host2, allowing us to remove host1
8. Reinstall host1 and deploy as additional host to environment

I am setting up this environment for backup tonight and expect to run through the restore process tomorrow. I will let you know how this proceeds.

Thank you,
Andrew
