Description of problem:

Removing the default shortcuts of Gnome Shell from the menu bar, or whatever it's called, doesn't work. The icons are eventually re-added. I'm in the default XWindows session, but I had tried a complete Wayland session before this happened, though I'm not certain if it happened immediately after I switched back to XWindows.

Running Gnome 3.18.3 with all up-to-date packages in Fedora 23.
