Description Jim Lewis 2016-03-23 05:44:05 UTC
Description of problem:
Fedora 21 ran flawlessly for months without a reboot. Fedora 23 locks up hard, takes about 2-3 days.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Fedora 23, Mate-Compbiz spin from main site, verified MD5 sum, latest updates. Fresh install with format. Took the partitioning defaults.

How reproducible:
Just let it run for a few days.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.

Actual results:
Locks up hard, no Caps Lock light toggle, can't ping, etc. Not screen saver related.

Expected results:
Run "forever" without a problem.

Additional info:
I looked at the output from dmesg on both versions, saw a few differences but nothing that looked major. The system runs just fine when up. Note that I am now running a live image of Fedora 21 on this same system (same hard drive, same everything) and it has been running for a week with no issues. I expect it to run "forever".

System is not being stressed in any way. It is in a cold office environment and on a very good UPS.

Under BIOS I ran every test, no fails of any kind. I also reseated the memory and ran "dnf update" which brought in a new kernel. Did not help.

I wish I could provide more info. I used to write and debug Ethernet device drivers for IBM, if there is another way to help diagnose/fix this issue I would be happy to try it. I can build kernels and do all that other cool stuff.

This is on an HP 110-417c desktop system. I have not tried a BIOS update yet. Fedora 22 was not run on this system.

Note: I put the severity to High as I would like to use this system at work. Feel free to lower if appropriate.

I have found that this system will run Fedora 23 for weeks without locking up if I do not have a monitor attached (i.e. X is not running). Hooking up a monitor, to either the VGA or DVI port, will cause the machine to lock up in a few days.

*********** MASS BUG UPDATE **************

We apologize for the inconvenience. There is a large number of bugs to go through and several of them have gone stale. Due to this, we are doing a mass bug update across all of the Fedora 23 kernel bugs.

Fedora 23 has now been rebased to 4.7.4-100.fc23. Please test this kernel update (or newer) and let us know if you issue has been resolved or if it is still present with the newer kernel.

If you have moved on to Fedora 24 or 25, and are still experiencing this issue, please change the version to Fedora 24 or 25.

If you experience different issues, please open a new bug report for those.

This bug is being closed with INSUFFICIENT_DATA as there has not been a response in 4 weeks. If you are still experiencing this issue, please reopen and attach the relevant data from the latest kernel you are running and any data that might have been requested previously.

Seems to be running okay with CentOS 6.6. Please close.
