Description Corey Marthaler 2016-06-17 16:31:49 UTC
Description of problem:
Filing a low severity bug about the amount of time it takes to start the initial global lock. Would it be possible to print a warning in this specific case like "This operation may take awhile..." to prevent the user from thinking this operation may be deadlocked? vgchange does appear to know that this is the case with the "lockspace not found or started" warning.

[root@mckinley-04 ~]# time vgchange --lock-start global
Skipping global lock: lockspace not found or started
  VG global starting sanlock lockspace
Starting locking. Waiting until locks are ready...

real 2m42.135s
user 0m0.019s
sys 0m0.055s

Additional starts take roughly 20 seconds:
[root@mckinley-04 ~]# time vgchange --lock-start cache_sanity
  VG cache_sanity starting sanlock lockspace
Starting locking. Waiting until locks are ready...

real 0m23.211s
user 0m0.021s
sys 0m0.056s

Comment 1 David Teigland 2016-06-17 16:40:46 UTC
Yes, a warning about the time length or even a countdown would be beneficial and quick to add.

For 7.4 I'm thinking about ways to shorten/skip the sanlock delays for adding a lockspace and for waiting for failed leases.
