it seems that new freetype-2.1.9 causes this problem. Does it work for you if you reinstall the old freetype-2.1.7? which version of freetype is used on debian? Going back to 2.1.7 (from FC2) fixes it. Debian seems to use 2.1.7, too. This also hits the Enterprise branch. More specifically, it is an issue in the second beta for RHEL 4. evince patch
This is the patch I applied to evince (ported from kpdf). It should work for xpdf too... This isn't applied to evince-0.1.0-0.20050120 (from jkatz) yet, right? Because this version fails on the same PDFs as xpdf does. No, I checked in the patch two minutes ago ;) The problem is now fixed in xpdf-3.00-15. It will showup in rawhide soon. Marco, thanks for your info. An advisory has been issued which should help the problem described in this bug report. This report is therefore being closed with a resolution of ERRATA.
