Please try the mkvtoolnix build from this copr repo:

dnf copr enable rathann/mkvtoolnix
dnf upgrade mkvtoolnix libmatroska libebml

and tell me if that works for you.

This is a rebuild of the version that's in the upcoming Fedora 25 and I'm trying to decide whether or not to backport it to F24 and F23.

There is no crash as before, but only a frozen window with black contents.

Please retry with current mkvtoolnix-9.5.0 build from the same copr. Could you share one of your mkv files so that I can reproduce this locally?

This message is a reminder that Fedora 23 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 23. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora  'version'
of '23'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' 
to a later Fedora version.

to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version 
of Fedora, you are encouraged  change the 'version' to a later Fedora

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's 
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a 
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes 
bugs or makes them obsolete.

I resolved the issue: the unresponsive black window after gui start is visible during loading of the video file. I got pretty big files (1-4 GB) and the time when the window is unresponsive counts in tenths of seconds.

This is mere an usability bug, I will report it upstream.
