"Recent" was renamed to "Photos", but it should not prevent you from browsing your Google Photos content.

Questions:

(a) Did you add a Google online account in Settings -> Online Accounts?

(b) Do you have any content in photos.google.com?

(c) Do you have the gnome-online-miners package installed?
