Does installing passing the argument nofb work any better?

Same problem here, Dell Latitude D600 notebook, radeon 9000.

I diagnosed the problem further and was able to install FC3 on it.
The workaround is to attach "normal" CRT monitor to the card, and it
shows the installation properly.
Somehow Anaconda mis-configures the Radeon to disable the LCD panel
output (built-in notebook panel in my case).

The card was only working with an external monitor after the first
re-boot as well, and started to work properly after I re-configured X
and set up monitor as Dell LCD panel.

Same problem, I use radeon x800xt graphics card, it doesn'w work with DVI cable 
and not with analog cable. But in my case it happens after I install fedora in 
text mode too, just the time the system is to enter graphical mode. Booting with 
'linux nofb' doesn't help.

Does FC4 handle this any better?

No, FC4 still has this problem.

I'm using a Sapphire X800 XT (R420) AGP graphics card connected to a NEC
MultiSync 1770NX monitor (which is very similar to the 1760NX) using a DVI cable.

If I try to install the i386 version, anaconda detects the monitor correctly,
the video card as 'unknown' and no xorg.conf is not created at the end of
installation.

As anaconda assumes the install is 'headless', it proceeds in text mode and
after installation, the machine boots in runlevel 3.

Configuring an xorg.conf file by hand is quite difficult for me as I'm a newbie,
but 'xorg -configure' doesn't work (it doesn't detect the PS/2 mouse and uses
the 'ati' driver instead of 'radeon') and 'system-config-display --reconfig'
crashes with a 'hardware_state not defined' message. (Also, kudzu detects the
X800 XT on boot, but segfaults trying to configure it - I forget which line it
segfaulted on).

If I try to install the x86_64 version, the video card is detected as 'vesa' but
the monitor is 'unknown'. The screen then stays blank. I can only install if i
use the 'text' option so that text mode is used.

During installation, if I select the 'Personal Desktop/Workstation' installation
profile, the machine will try to boot to runlevel 5 and I'll get a blank screen.
So I have to choose text mode installation and a 'Custom' installation and at
the end of installation, the machine will boot to runlevel 3.

However, the x86_64 installation does create an xorg.conf (which doesn't work,
thus the blank screen) but can be fixed.

I corrected the xorg.conf created by the X86_64 installation by using the
information in /usr/share/hwdata (Cards, MonitorsDB) and I now have an xorg.conf
that works great with either installation (i386, x86_64).

This hardware setup used to work fine with FC2 and only started happening since
FC3. It also occurs on CentOS 4.x.

However, if I swap the graphics card out for a Nvidia one (tested with a Quadro
980XGL and 7800 GTX), the graphical installation proceeds as normal for both
versions of FC4 ( I didn't try FC3, but I reckon it will work). This works
whatever cable is used (DSUB, DVI) or monitor (TFT, CRT).

Using an analog cable with the NEC monitor (or even a CRT) didn't work for me
(anaconda detects the monitor correctly but not the graphics card, or the other
way around depending on whether it's i386 or x86_64)

I forgot to add, I did try using options such as skipddc, nofb, resolution,
noprobe, noacpi in every combination/permutation I could think of, but none of
them worked. Also text mode installation has a few issues, but that's not
relevant for this bug.

I still have the problem with FC5 Test1. The installer tries to use 800x600,
which doesn't work with this setup. The LCD/video card setup doesn't work with
800x600, only the native resolution of the LCD, 1024x768.

Does booting anaconda with resolution=1024x768 work?

Fedora Core 3 is now maintained by the Fedora Legacy project for security
updates only. If this problem is a security issue, please reopen and
reassign to the Fedora Legacy product. If it is not a security issue and
hasn't been resolved in the current FC5 updates or in the FC6 test
release, reopen and change the version to match.

The way x configuration works has been completely revamped for FC6, please
retest with the latest version and reopen.
