Closing as WONTFIX since seems the solution from our end is unreliable, and would require motif to work differently.

Specifically:
"If you look at what's going on in the X protocol, Motif is drawing directly on the root window. This bypasses the normal drawing stream of a Composited desktop. From a protocol perspective, the icon doesn't exist."

Unfortunately not much we can do without reworking Motif I believe...

If you look at 1350000 (or the linked MotifZone bug, but MotifZone appears offline at the moment), there's a proposed patch already.

You don't need to rework anything, just use the other icon drawing mode that Motif already has.

No rework of Motif required.

I don't appear to have a re-open button. Could you please re-open this for me?

Hello Peter,

Upstream mentioned that the proposed fix was unreliable. I'm not sure we can proceed with this proposed fix without affecting other places of Motif.

I will investigate further, however this has been on the works for more than two years, I'm not sure a good solution can be found.
