Description Mike Hughes 2016-11-10 15:15:12 UTC
Description of problem:

Fedora Media Writer does not open its window and runs indefinitely in background if it cannot find the file: https://fedoraproject.org/releases.json. If started from a menu, there is no indication that this has occurred and multiple processes will be created if the menu is retried. It has to be killed from an external command. It would be nice if an ISO file could still be written out but at the least, it needs to open its window and indicate what it is doing, allowing the user to close it if unsuccessful.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

 4.0.0-2.fc24

How reproducible:

Any situation which prevents the file from being found

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Remove the file from the server (seems to be done in preparation for a new release) or shut down the local network interface.

2. Run the program from a terminal

Actual results:

Program retries every 10 seconds indefinitely without opening a window.

Expected results:

Application should open a window and indicate what is happening, with the option to exit. Some of its functions could work without this file.

Comment 1 Martin Bříza 2016-11-10 15:18:51 UTC
The file not found error is completely unrelated to the problem with the UI of the application.
Can you please state more information about your system? Especially if you're running on X or Wayland and your graphics drivers, please.

Comment 2 Mike Hughes 2016-11-10 16:21:51 UTC
OK, issue with Wayland or the Enlightenment desktop. The window opens properly on XFCE which I am pretty sure runs on X.org. The program had been working properly until a few days ago (I have been using it quite a bit) and I assumed that the file error was the problem but there could have been an update in there. Sorry, I should have checked for GUI issues.

Video driver is "radeon", chip is HD6450

Comment 3 Mike Hughes 2016-11-27 12:03:38 UTC
Program works after update of 11/25.

Thanks!

Comment 4 Marius Andreiana 2017-07-11 15:16:52 UTC
It really doesn't work, now that
https://fedoraproject.org/releases.json
doesn't exist.

Instead, it freezes or closes itself after selecting F26 manually downloaded image

Probably related report

mediawriter-4.1.0-1.fc24.x86_64

Comment 6 Martin Bříza 2017-07-11 15:34:29 UTC
Well, it looks for https://getfedora.org/releases.json and the file does exist.
Even it it doesn't exist, FMW doesn't freeze so the problem lies elsewhere.
The ask.fedoraproject.org page you linked doesn't work.
If it closes itself, it has probably crashed. Can you please use abrt to report a bug with the crash?

Comment 7 Marius Andreiana 2017-07-11 16:04:00 UTC
Yes Martin, I tried but doesn't want to -- attached

I'm on F24 x64, X11.
After choosing .iso file (manually downloaded, checked SHA), it freezes the system, must reboot. I waited over 1 minute.

This works now too:
https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/99840/as-soon-as-i-start-fedora-media-writer-the-computer-locks-up/
(I didn't report that)

Comment 9 Martin Bříza 2017-07-11 16:13:11 UTC
Hmm, that's a shame. This way it'll be really hard to debug.
Can you please at least specify which graphics card and driver are you using?

Comment 11 Martin Bříza 2017-07-11 16:20:47 UTC
No proprietary drivers and a nvidia graphics card -> nouveau.
There's about 20 crashes reported about mediawriter using nouveau. There's nothing I can do about that, unfortunately. We just need to wait until it's fixed on nouveau's side.
