Bug 1396464

Description of problem:
Updated to kernel 4.8.7, the lastest version in FC24, that is not updates-testing. Shortly after boot the display backlight stated to flash, the fan started to spin down and up very quickly and the disk was making strange noise. Seemed to me, power is switched on and off very quickly. Then starting new services stopped. I could do ctrl-alt-del and restart with 4.8.6, that runs stable for hours. On the disk there were small, but real filesystem corruptions. I did not dare to boot this kernel anymore. Updated to 4.8.8 and it seems ok.

How reproducible:
Install kernel 4.8.7 on a Dell i686 laptop system (no, don't do it, imo it has the potential to harm your hardware)

Steps to Reproduce:
1. install 4.8.7
2. boot

Actual results:
hardware starts to shake

Expected results:
system boots normally

Additional info:
seems fixed with 4.8.8, though i did not make extensive tests.
When i read in the 4.8.7 notes: "All users of the 4.8 series must update to 4.8.7", i'd object, at least for i686: Beware of 4.8.7. Update to 4.8.8 running
dnf --enablerepo=updates-testing kernel
Even it were not as stable as one expects from a released software, what i saw with 4.8.7 is imo disastrous. Did not try to analyze what might cause it. 4.8.7 contains so many changes. Could be, the relatively new mechanism of mapping hardware control registers into certain regions of the memory matters here and somthing else writes to these addresses.
