Description Didier 2016-11-24 22:54:37 UTC
Description of problem:

Dell M7710 with switchable graphics : iGPU (i915) and dGPU (amdgpu).

After upgrading from a fully updated F24 to F25, X crashes in an endless loop ; the system fails to start GDM and is consequently unusable.

This happens with :
* Xwayland enabled/disabled
* switchable graphics enabled (i915) and disabled (amdgpu).

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

* xorg-x11-server-Xorg 1.19.0-0.8.rc2.fc25
* mesa-... 12.0.3-3.fc25

Coming from :
* xorg-x11-server-Xorg 1.18.4-5.fc24
* mesa-... 12.0.3-2.fc24

How reproducible:

Always

Additional info:

* Without xorg-x11-drv-amdgpu-1.1.2-3.20160929git97d7386c.fc25.x86_64.rpm installed, the following error occurs :

(WW) glamor0: Failed to get GLSL version
(EE) modeset(0): Failed to initialize glamor at ScreenInit() time.
(EE) Fatal server error:
(EE) AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0

* With xorg-x11-drv-amdgpu-1.1.2-3.20160929git97d7386c.fc25.x86_64.rpm installed, the following error occurs :

(II) AMDGPU(0): Direct rendering enabled
(WW) glamor0: Failed to get GLSL version
(EE) AMDGPU(0): Failed to initialize glamor.
(EE) AMDGPU(0): Acceleration initialization failed

* According to https://people.freedesktop.org/~cbrill/dri-log/?channel=radeon&highlight_names=&date=2016-06-03, this may be due to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=96344 (patch included).

* As mesa is almost the same version between F24 and F25, is this bug due to the X11 server 1.18.4 -> 1.19 upgrade ?

Comment 1 Didier 2016-11-24 23:45:52 UTC
Downgrading to xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.18.4-6.fc25.x86_64.rpm does not resolve the issue ;
seems like I'm momentarily stuck with an unusable system.

Comment 2 Fedora End Of Life 2017-11-16 19:52:56 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 25 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 25. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '25'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 25 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 3 andrew 2017-12-11 03:30:13 UTC
Didier, did you get anywhere with this ?

Comment 4 andrew 2017-12-11 03:33:21 UTC
//too early hit the send.
I'm getting the same error on rawhide (f28). https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104206

Comment 5 Didier 2017-12-11 08:25:08 UTC
Andrew, as the bug is more than a year old with no follow-up (this is not a rant towards Adam J.), I simply don't recall what my subsequent actions were at the time.

I do know I did disable the iGPU (Intel) a long time ago, which circumvented lots of issues, most probably this one too.

(concerning switchable graphics : I filed a bug report too, but if there is no substantial response, I try to circumvent the stuff instead of fruitlessy debugging - due to lack of knowledge - on my own ; I need to get work done. :) )

Comment 6 Fedora End Of Life 2017-12-12 10:20:20 UTC
Fedora 25 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2017-12-12. Fedora 25 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
