Description Hal Ginsberg 2016-11-25 03:57:37 UTC
Created attachment 1224110 [details]
Screenshot of a small portion of my desktop. At center bottom is Weather Report applet with temperature 46 and generic screen icon rather than weather icon.

Description of problem: Weather icons on panel don't always show. Sometimes there is a generic screen icon rather than an iamge of clouds, rain, etc. See attachment.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

Weather Report 1.16.0

How reproducible:

The problem doesn't always occur. Sometimes the correct weather icons do show on the panel. Also, the problem only occurs when I am using a gnome-colors icons set as part of my customized default theme.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Fedora 25 either by disk image or upgrade through gnome.
2. Use the Mate desktop
3. Install gnome-colors-icon-theme.
4. Choose gnome-colors-tribute or any other gnome-colors icon set.
5. Add Weather Report to desktop.

Actual results:

Sometimes the weather icon shows on the panel. Sometimes, a generic icon shows.

Expected results:

The correct weather icon should always show in the panel.

Well, the generic icon is displayed if the correct icon is missing in icon theme.
Do you see that with another icon theme, ie. mate-icon-theme?
After you switched the icon theme do a 'killall mate-panel' to reload the applet.

Yes several of the other themes show the correct weather icon. But your comment suggests the problem is that the latest gnome-colors-icon-theme does not have all the weather icons. I compared it to other themes that do have more weather icons. I downgraded to a previous version. We'll see if this solves the problem.

Comment 3 Hal Ginsberg 2016-11-25 13:17:04 UTC
Okay. Downgrade did not solve the problem but I worked around it by copying mate icons ( which appear to be complete) into the gnome icon folder. I copied /usr/share/icons/mate/32x32 into /usr/share/icons/gnome/mate/32x32. The real problem appears to be in the places subfolder but I just did a quick and dirty copy and renamed the mate gnome subfolder 32x32.old.

Comment 4 Hal Ginsberg 2016-11-25 15:24:51 UTC
Copying /usr/share/icons/mate/32x32 into /usr/share/icons/gnome/32x32 does cause problems with mismatched icons from other apps like LibreOffice. I reverted to the original /usr/share/icons/gnome/32x32 but copied over /usr/share/icons/mate/32x32/status into /usr/share/icons/gnome/32x32/status. This seems to have done the trick.

Yes, a missing icon is a problem by the icon theme.
mate-icon-theme is a fork from gnome-icon-theme and the the weather-applet is from gnome-2 days. So we can say mate-icon-theme is a reference theme for mate (former gnome-2) application. By the way, we added some icons to m-i-t if we found a application where a icon was missing.
So gnome-colors-icon-theme should do the same.
I am not sure if g-c-i-t have an upstreram but maybe fedora maintainer can add the missing icon.

Did you override the dir complete or only add missing icons?
Would be interested to know which icon was missing?
Or did the applet always display the generic icon don't matter which weather you have ?

Comment 6 Hal Ginsberg 2016-11-25 16:50:38 UTC
I overrode the ~/gnome/32x32/status dir completely with ~/mate/32x32/status. I did not add icons. There appear to be many night-time weather icons missing from the gnome status directories. The applet did not always display the generic icon. In the delivered gnome icon directories there is a cloudy skies icon which would show but not a nighttime cloudy skies icon for example. That icon and all the others - I think - are in the mate status directory. Hope this helps!

Comment 7 Fedora End Of Life 2017-11-16 19:42:35 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 25 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 25. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '25'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 25 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 8 Fedora End Of Life 2017-12-12 10:19:46 UTC
Fedora 25 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2017-12-12. Fedora 25 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
