Description Ian Tewksbury 2016-11-30 19:21:09 UTC
Document URL:

https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en/red-hat-satellite/6.2/single/installation-guide/#hardware_storage_prerequisites

Section Number and Name:

2.1. STORAGE REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Describe the issue:

The documentation says:

"The table applies to both the Satellite Server and each Capsule Server."

But this is not necessarily true. If a capsule does not have the pulp feature enabled, for instance, then it should not need all that pulp storage.

Suggestions for improvement:

A new column should be added to the "Table 2.1. Minimum Storage Requirements for Installation" which has an entry for which Capsule Features apply to each storage requirement.

This way users can size their different capsule types correctly.

Assigning to Charles for review.

Charles - this might need a little investigation to make sure we understand which features require a certain type of storage.

You can find a list of features here -

https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_satellite/6.2/html-single/architecture_guide/#sect-Documentation-Architecture_Guide-Capsule_Features

I suspect that the content-related features will be the main ones that require storage, but it will be good to check to be sure.

Hello Charles, Hello Ian,

It looks like Pulp is the only optional component in the table, so how about we move the pulp directories to the bottom and add a sub-heading row, similar to:

---Pulp storage---

Directory Installation Size Runtime Size Consideration

If there are other optional directories we can treat them the same way. If that plan works for everyone, we can add a needinfo request on engineering to tell us which directories are required for which features.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve,

My understanding is that:

`/var/lib/mongodb/` is only needed if pulp is enabled.

`/var/lib/pgsql/` is only ever on the main satellite server(s) and never on capsules.

Though that was just my understanding so confirmation with engineering would be useful.

Blue skies,
Ian

From Rich Jerrido in BZ#1436442 -

Document URL: https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_satellite/6.2/html-single/installation_guide/#hardware_storage_prerequisites

Section Number and Name: 2.1

Describe the issue: In the directions for this section, we state:

"The table applies to both the Satellite Server and each Capsule Server. "

In the table provided in section 2.1 the user is told to allocate space for /var/lib/pgsql. This is a requirement ONLY for the Satellite server itself. Capsules do not run Postgres and as such the user does not need to allocate space for the database.

Suggestions for improvement: Make a note that the requirement for /var/lib/pgsql only applies to Satellite servers.
