Description Richard W.M. Jones 2016-12-02 16:18:13 UTC
Description of problem:

In Fedora 25, the netconsole module cannot be loaded. It fails
with "Unknown error 524" under every plausible configuration
I have tried.

# modprobe netconsole netconsole=@/wlp3s0,@192.168.0.167/modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'netconsole': Unknown error 524

Also if started as a service:

# systemctl status netconsole | cat
● netconsole.service - SYSV: Initializes network console logging
Loaded: loaded (/etc/rc.d/init.d/netconsole; generated; vendor preset: disabled)
   Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Fri 2016-12-02 16:13:58 GMT; 3min 26s ago
     Docs: man:systemd-sysv-generator(8)
  Process: 4712 ExecStart=/etc/rc.d/init.d/netconsole start (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

kernel-core-4.8.8-300.fc25.x86_64

How reproducible:

100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Try to load the module.

Comment 1 Richard W.M. Jones 2016-12-02 16:22:56 UTC
Ha, the real error is hidden in the kernel logs:

[ 934.567031] netpoll: netconsole: wlp3s0 doesn't support polling, aborting

Comment 2 Josh Boyer 2016-12-02 17:24:23 UTC
Seems like this is (not) working as designed. The driver in use has to support polling.

Comment 3 Richard W.M. Jones 2016-12-02 17:31:45 UTC
Well the error message sucks, but I'll close it.
