Description Kalev Lember 2017-03-24 16:17:08 UTC
Now that F26 Alpha is slipping one week, it may make sense to pull in the final GNOME 3.24.0 release, instead of shipping with the 3.23.90 pre-release that's in stable in F26.

The benefits for pulling it in would include making sure that the testing that is done downstream is done against the latest stable code so that bug reports are still valid, instead of doing all the downstream testing against an old pre-release. And of course the final stable release includes numerous fixes that users would benefit from as well.

The downside is increased testing requirements and a risk of running into new issues. I've discussed this with Fedora QA and here's their view:

12:59 < kalev> kparal, adamw: hey, I was idly wandering if it would make sense to pull the gnome 3.24.0 update into the alpha release now that we're slipping anyway? I guess that would invalidate all the testing done so far, so may not be a good idea so late?
13:00 < kparal> otoh we don't have that many requirements for alpha (just login, terminal and web browser, basically)
13:02 < kparal> I don't have a strong opinion here
16:08 < adamw> kparal: hum, it's a thought
16:09 < roshi> it has potential to cause issues, but doesn't really affect the amount of work we need to do one way or the other
16:13 < adamw> i can throw together a live image with the update i guess
17:03 < kalev> adamw, kparal: let me propose it formally then if you both think it makes sense
17:03 < adamw> kalev: yep, just needs a bug marked as FE
17:04 * kalev nods.
17:04 < adamw> could pick one of the bugs the udpate is already marked as fixing as a proxy, or file a new one
17:04 < kalev> I'll go file a new one
17:04 < adamw> i'll throw together a live image and test it a bit

Comment 2 Mike Ruckman 2017-03-24 16:22:33 UTC
I'd be +1 FE if it passes Adam's local smoke testing.

Comment 3 Nick Bebout 2017-03-24 17:15:13 UTC
I agree with Mike. +1 if it passes Adam's local testing

Comment 4 Adam Williamson 2017-03-24 21:22:45 UTC
Looks fine to me, both in the live image I built and on my own machine. So +1 FE. That's +3, setting accepted. But I don't plan to include this in a stable push request until *after* we do an RC3 with it included, just in case RC3 testing reveals some major issue.
