Description Jason Dickerson 2017-03-28 18:40:44 UTC
1. Proposed title of this feature request

[RFE] Ability to create rules using subscription-manager facts to assign subscriptions to hosts.

3. What is the nature and description of the request?

We need the ability to customize how subscriptions are allocated, by creating some intelligence or rule set, within Satellite 6.

4. Why does the customer need this? (List the business requirements here)

My customer has many subscription allocations in their manifest. Some are SKU RH00008 and some are RH0103678. If they use RH0103678 for all of their physical 1 or 2 socket systems, and use RH00008 for all of their physical systems with more than 2 sockets and all of their virtual guest systems, they have more than enough subscriptions. The SKU RH00008 is allocated 1 instance per vm guest or physical server socket. Two RH00008 instances are one subscription.

Satellite 6 is either randomly allocating subscriptions or assigning the first one found; resulting in a subscription shortage. This was not an issue on Satellite 5.

5. How would the customer like to achieve this? (List the functional requirements here)

In theory these rules could be based on subscription-manager facts.

6. For each functional requirement listed, specify how Red Hat and the customer can test to confirm the

Create said rules and attempt to register several different Physical and Virtual Guest systems.

7. Is there already an existing RFE upstream or in Red Hat Bugzilla?

Not that I know of.

8. Does the customer have any specific timeline dependencies and which release would they like to target (i.e. RHEL5, RHEL6)?

The sooner the better. This is impacting their ability to properly consume subscriptions, leading to a shortage. It will take additional effort of the customer team to recode their puppet module to assign subscriptions properly based on the properties of the individual hosts.

9. Is the sales team involved in this request and do they have any additional input?

Yes, and I do not believe so at this time.

10. List any affected packages or components.

subscription manager on rhel 6 and 7
Satellite 6.2.8

11. Would the customer be able to assist in testing this functionality if implemented?

Absolutely
