Comment 1 Michel Plante 2005-02-12 20:39:10 UTC
it seem that there is something wrong there:

[root@localhost ~]# ls -l /dev/dvd
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 3 Feb 12 09:55 /dev/dvd -> hdc
[root@localhost ~]#
[root@localhost ~]# ls -l /dev/cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 3 Feb 12 09:55 /dev/cdrom -> hdc
[root@localhost ~]#

its like hal/kernel doesnt understand i have a dvd-rom

Comment 2 Michel Plante 2005-02-13 07:30:22 UTC
Id would like to say that i try what the guys told me on freenode irc on #fedora
i unplugued the LG cdwriter but strangely i am not suppose to do that fedora
should support having 2 dma drive so a pioneer dvd-rom and also LG cdwriter i
dont understand why Mandrake 10.1 and windows xp are able to handle it but not
fedora core 3 so it would be nice to have a fix for that cause if i unplugged
the LG cdwriter everything is getting back to normal but i need my cdwriter so i
dont want to buy a new cd combo just because fedora cant handle it.So 2
different OS are able to handle it so fedora should too if there is another
solution than buying a new combo tell me im gonna try it thank you.

Il paste here the dmsg | grep hdd of LG:
ide1: BM-DMA at 0xfc08-0xfc0f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:DMA
hdd: LG CD-RW CED-8080B, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdd: ATAPI 32X CD-ROM CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, DMA

Comment 3 Michel Plante 2005-02-15 01:35:52 UTC
I try kernel kernel-2.6.8-1.521vrf.i686.rpm and my ide Pioneer dvd-rom model
D-120 is now working fine and my LG is working fine too so try to understand
why maybe there is a patch on that kernel that fix everything up.

so the link is
ftp://194.199.20.114/linux/sourceforge/l/li/linux-vrf/kernel-2.6.8-1.521vrf.i686.rpm
so if its possible to see if its possible to make a fix or a new kernel for that
cause kernel version: kernel-2.6.10-1.760_FC3.i686.rpm is crashing my system up
when putting an audio cd.

an happy fedora core 3 user
Thank you

Comment 4 Michel Plante 2005-02-17 04:58:16 UTC
I play with kernel parameter all evening i add to /boot/grub/grub.conf
after the kernel version parameter that was already there i add ide=nodma
hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi

so there must be something that can be done so its automatic for certain
hardware in future version of kernel.Everything is fix now.

Comment 5 David Zeuthen 2005-02-17 15:20:47 UTC
Thanks for the update - you forgot to reassign to the kernel package
maintainers, so I'm doing that for you.

Comment 6 Dave Jones 2005-02-18 00:52:04 UTC
ide-scsi shouldnt be used at all for cd writing any more (and for reading it
should never have been needed), so you shouldnt be adding those parameters. Do
you still get problems if you disable DMA on those drives before you put a CD in ?

Comment 7 Michel Plante 2005-02-18 01:49:20 UTC
Well i discover a bug anyway with ide-scsi add to kernel parameter data cd dont
load but if i remove all kernel parameter then when i put an audio cd or data cd
or even a dvd movie the computer crash but i add ide=nodma and everything is fix
dvd playing movie is ok audio cd playing is ok and data cd loading is ok but for
data cd and dvd when i press the button on the cdrom it doesn open only opening
when i click right on the dvd movie icon or data icon on gnome desktop to eject
its fine so i guess kernel 2.6.9 and 2.6.10 for fedora doesnt support my cdroms
drives as dma

Comment 10 Dave Jones 2005-07-15 18:25:47 UTC
An update has been released for Fedora Core 3 (kernel-2.6.12-1.1372_FC3) which
may contain a fix for your problem. Please update to this new kernel, and
report whether or not it fixes your problem.

If you have updated to Fedora Core 4 since this bug was opened, and the problem
still occurs with the latest updates for that release, please change the version
field of this bug to 'fc4'.

Thank you.

This bug has been automatically closed as part of a mass update.
It had been in NEEDINFO state since July 2005.
If this bug still exists in current errata kernels, please reopen this bug.

There are a large number of inactive bugs in the database, and this is the only
way to purge them.

Thank you.
