Description Daniel Dadap 2017-08-22 18:23:32 UTC
Description of problem:

The patch 0001-composite-Implement-backing-store-Always.patch which is applied to the xorg-x11-server package in RHEL 6.8 and RHEL 6.9 breaks the video driver ABI.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

RHEL 6.8: 1.17.4-9.el6
RHEL 6.9: 1.17.4-16.el6

How reproducible:

Use a proprietary X driver (e.g. NVIDIA) on an affected server. There will be subtle bugs, e.g.:

* With workstation overlays enabled, GTK+ dropdown menus (e.g. in the nvidia-settings control panel) will be displayed at the wrong coordinates after a resolution change.
* Quad-buffered stereo flipping doesn't work correctly in a stereo-aware compositing window manager.

Additional info:

This is probably avoidable without a full revert of the relevant patch by adding the new field to the end of the WindowRec struct, though this hasn't been explicitly tested, yet.

Comment 2 Adam Jackson 2017-09-08 18:26:07 UTC
That certainly does need fixin'.

Comment 3 James Jones 2017-09-26 19:05:55 UTC
Just a quick update: We verified that adding the new bit to the end of the WindowRec rather than in the middle fixes the issue, as expected. Initial testing of that alternate patch doesn't reveal any further issues caused by such a change.
