Mysql will not start. When you try, a zero-length /var/run/mysqld.pid is
created.

[root@tbird /root]# service mysqld start
Starting MySQL: 

[root@tbird /root]# service mysqld status
mysqld dead but subsys locked
[root@tbird /root]# service mysqld stop
Shutting down MySQL server                                 [FAILED]
[root@tbird /root]#

I know.... this was fixed after the cut. Try chowning /var/lib/mysql to
mysql.mysql ("chown -R mysql.mysql /var/lib/mysql") or substitute the current
init script with the attached one.
