Description Joern Wiesner 2017-10-10 12:09:07 UTC
Description of problem:

On a fresh installation of Fedora 27 Beta for ARM the onboard WLAN module of a Raspberry Pi 3B doesn't get activated due to a missing firmware file.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

linux-firmware-20170828-77.gitb78acc9.fc27.noarch

How reproducible:

Always

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Grabbed the newly released Fedora-Workstation-armhfp-27_Beta-1.5-sda.raw.xz and installed it on my Raspberry Pi 3B.
2. 'nmcli d wifi list' displays nothing
3. dmesg|grep fail
[ 23.115400] brcmfmac mmc1:0001:1: Direct firmware load for brcm/brcmfmac43430-sdio.txt failed with error -2

Actual results:

No WLAN AP's visible

Expected results:

nmcli d wifi connect SSID password xxxxxx

should give a working WLAN connection

Additional info:

A quick look at the files in linux-firmware-20170828-77.gitb78acc9.fc27.noarch reveals that the file brcmfmac43430-sdio.txt is missing. After copying the missing file from another Pi 3B running Fedora 26 WLAN is working as expected.

From: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Architectures/ARM/Raspberry_Pi#Wifi:

"Wifi on the Raspberry Pi 3 is supported in Fedora.

There's a file we can't currently redistribute which you'll need to retrieve. This can be done either post first boot using onboard ethernet or when setting up the SD card. The command needed when running from a Raspberry Pi 3 is as follows. Once retrieved you just need to reboot and WiFi should be available. "

sudo curl https://fedora.roving-it.com/brcmfmac43430-sdio.txt -o /lib/firmware/brcm/brcmfmac43430-sdio.txt

Comment 2 Stephen Reaves 2018-04-15 15:56:42 UTC
I followed the same steps on a fresh install of Fedora Server 27 for rpi3. After I copied over the file, I was able to see my wifi device.

However, when I type nmcli it shows 'plugin missing' under wlan0. I tried nmcli device wifi connect SSID and it said 'Error: No Wi-Fi device found"

This message is a reminder that Fedora 27 is nearing its end of life.
On 2018-Nov-30 Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for
Fedora 27. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases
that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as
EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '27'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 27 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 4 Ben Cotton 2018-11-30 21:00:56 UTC
Fedora 27 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2018-11-30. Fedora 27 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.

Comment 5 Michael De La Rue 2019-01-01 21:13:39 UTC
This is verified in Fedora 29. Should be reopened.
