Description of problem:
one of the six virtual consoles may be
replaced by an unicode-console, or just
add the 8th console, which can display
utf8-coded unicode fonts.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to virtual console 1
2.ls a directory containing unicode filename
  

Actual Results:  can not read those names

Expected Results:  can read those names

unicode mode for the console is setup by the initscripts. Can you check
why that is not working for you? Have you changed the LANG settings?

Later kernels run in utf8 mode by default.
