Description roywilli 2018-03-28 16:58:39 UTC
Document URL:
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_satellite/6.3/html/provisioning_guide/

Section Number and Name:
Section 4, Configure Networking

Describe the issue:
Add section to describe what is need to point external dhcp to Sat/Capsule for tftp/PXE. This is currently not specified and requires unnecessary delay in delivery for customers with existing dhcp infrastructure.

Suggestions for improvement:
Add a subsection for users using external dhcp (i.e. Infoblox, etc.). Specify in this section that the dhcp server will need to have option 66 and 67 configured to point at the Sat/appropriate Capsule.

Option 66: <IP of Sat/Capsule>
Option 67: /pxelinux.0

Additional information:
This information, while relatively simple, take a great deal of time to compile if not familiar with these services. If this does not make it into the provisioning guide, it should at least be written up as a KB article.

Hello Roy

Thank you for raising this bug.

That guide was written along time ago in a narrative style about provisioning. There is a section in the Installation Guide [1] about using external services, which includes using an external DHCP server. I am wondering if adding the link to the DHCP options there, in the Installation Guide, and then linking that section from the provisioning guide might be a better long term solution.

We could make it plain the intent of the Provisioning Guide is to show the provisioning concepts.

Thank you

Placing the info there should be sufficient. My only concern is that it may be misconstrued as only being necessary for the configuration called out in that section. I think it needs to be fairly obvious, that this needs to be added to any external dhcp source when PXE is planned to be used.

Hello Roy

At the moment, in 6.3., using third party DHCP server is not supported.[1]
We do not want to give the impression something might be supported by mentioning in in the guides.

After discussion with lzap, when using the supported configurations documented in the Installation Guide, Satellite takes care of those options.

Thank you
