Description of problem:

starting gnome-documents-3.22.2-5.el7.x86_64

does not auto-start some needed indexer, the identity of which I do not know

start gnome-documents in a directory containing PDFs

[herrold@centos-7 ~]$ pwd
[herrold@centos-7 ~]$ ls *pdf
201802-IB-subscriptions.pdf  select_tut.pdf

Actual results:

One gets the error:

[herrold@centos-7 ~]$ gnome-documents
Gjs-Message: JS LOG: Error indexing the getting started PDF: Filesystem miner is not active

[herrold@centos-7 ~]$ 

Expected results:

no std out  / std err noise

AND and enable needed helper application which is started when gnome-documents starts, and is quelled / killed when it is exited

Rhel7.5 was released today, is there any chance you would be able to check with rhel7.5? There was lot of gnome-documents improvements and bug fixes made in rhel7.5.

Yes, the improvements for https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=791518 that were added in RHEL 7.5 might have helped with this bug.

However, RHEL 7 is approaching its Extended Life Cycle Support phase; and GNOME Documents is only weakly maintained upstream. Given the non-critical nature of this bug, it's not fit for RHEL 7 anymore, and GNOME Documents isn't part of RHEL 8.
