Description Joachim Frieben 2005-06-02 08:39:56 UTC
From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050513 Epiphany/1.6.1

Description of problem:
There is no active DRI support for the S3 SuperSavage IX/C SDR graphics chip in the current X system.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
xorg-x11-6.8.2-31

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot system.
2. Run glxinfo.

Actual Results: glxinfo returns "direct rendering: No". This is a major loss of functionality.

Expected Results: Direct rendering should be enabled.

Additional info:

Compared to other systems, there is only a "(II) Loading extension XFree86-DRI" entry in "Xorg.0.log" - that's all. DRI is reported to be functional for at least 1 year. A recent posting on this topic can be found at http://probo.probo.com/pipermail/savage40/2005-May/000384.html. Updating the "savage" driver should be considered.

Comment 1 Mike A. Harris 2005-06-02 21:54:37 UTC
Savage DRI support is insecure and experimental, which is why it is
disabled by default in the upstream source code. Once upstream fixes
the security problems in Savage DRI support, and the code is considered
"stable", it will be enabled by default in Xorg sources upstream, and
a future release of X.Org will ship with this support enabled by
default.

Once upstream believes the code to be both secure and stable, and the
kernel developers believe the Savage DRM to be secure and stable, we
will consider including it in a future Fedora Core release.

Users who wish to try the experimental DRI support for Savage, may wish
to join the dri-devel.net and xorg mailing lists
for assistance building and installing the necessary modules, and to
help upstream get the driver secured and stablized so that it may make
it into future releases.

Hope this helps.
