Description Upstream Release Monitoring 2018-06-29 12:19:11 UTC
Latest upstream release: 0.3.95
Current version/release in rawhide: 0.3.2-14.fc29
URL: http://lensfun.sourceforge.net/

Please consult the package updates policy before you issue an update to a stable branch: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Updates_Policy

More information about the service that created this bug can be found at: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Upstream_release_monitoring

Please keep in mind that with any upstream change, there may also be packaging changes that need to be made. Specifically, please remember that it is your responsibility to review the new version to ensure that the licensing is still correct and that no non-free or legally problematic items have been added upstream.

Waiting at least for digikam to adapt to new API,

What is the current state of this issue?

The current lensfun database that is used in Fedora, is hopelessly outdated. Even rather old camera models like Canon EOS-80D (released in Feb 2016) are missing, not to speak of current models or objectives. Meanwhile the older models are disappearing from the market, which renders the database more and more useless in its current state.

Comment 3 Rex Dieter 2019-11-04 01:20:52 UTC
It's a difficult situation when the project you (lensfun) rely on doesn't make regular formal releases on which to base packaging on.

That said, lensfun does include a utility 'lensfun-update-data' (part of lensfun-tools package), which can help some of the issues you describe (ie, help when the database is out-of-date).

Comment 4 Germano Massullo 2020-01-11 15:24:41 UTC
Rex, if you provide more infos about problems that make hard to package lensfun, I could start a polite discussion on upstream mailing list. So that in future we could have sources easier to package

Comment 5 Rex Dieter 2020-01-11 19:49:32 UTC
I think comment #3 sums it up. The issue asked-for here primarily was up-to-date lensfun database, and I mentioned that users can update that part themselves if needed.

Comment 6 Graham White 2021-08-04 14:07:06 UTC
I fixed a FTBFS for lensfun earlier this week [1] and came across an issue on the LenFun tracker [2] that basically says development on the project is halted/dead until someone else takes over maintenance. Hence, no new releases are likely to be made. It's also worth noting that lensfun-0.3.95 is considered an alpha release since it was just a point in time release from the main branch. Both of these assertions are backed up by their latest news file [3]. There have also been some fairly recent [4] efforts from the community to bump the version number and make a new release [4].

There are hundred of commits since the 0.3.95 release, most of them working on the camera database so I wonder whether we should consider moving to releasing from their git version tree?

I'm bringing over the text of #2080840 with thanks to Jacob Alzen for reporting...

The v0.3.2 version that we have now is roughly seven years old at this point. It would be great if we could update to the relatively recently released https://github.com/lensfun/lensfun/releases/tag/v0.3.3 version.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
v0.3.3: https://github.com/lensfun/lensfun/releases/tag/v0.3.3

Comment 9 Graham White 2022-08-04 15:06:29 UTC
It does seem reasonable to me that now we have a new major release we should try building it and testing it against the various things that use it in Fedora (I think these are at least Digikam and gimp-lensfun).
