Description Justin Moore 2005-08-07 21:37:24 UTC
Description of problem:
Distorted sound during any sort of disk I/O. Sound is high-pitched static that
slows or halts sound playback.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:
Every time.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start an application that plays sound (i.e., xmms, mplayer, etc).
2. During playback, create disk I/O.  'dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/zero.txt bs=8k
count=128k' works well.
3. Sit back and listen to a high-pitched whine.

Actual results:

Expected results:

Additional info:
It's been there for a while -- since FC1 -- but I've been lazy and kept hoping
that some upgrade would just fix it. The irritation level finally outweighed my
laziness, so here's the bug report. :)

Comment 4 Dave Jones 2005-08-09 20:46:30 UTC
can you try adding -r 48000 to the /etc/esd.conf file on the line that starts
with spawn_options=

Comment 5 Justin Moore 2005-08-09 21:00:59 UTC
I'm not running esd, I'm just using alsa.

Regardless, I changed /etc/esd.conf and forced mplayer and xmms to use esd. I
went to

xmms
-> Options
   -> Preferences
      -> eSound Output Plugin 1.2.10

and played an mp3. I also did

mplayer -ao esd 202-Yer_Blues.mp3
mplayer -ao alsa -s 48000 202-Yer_Blues.mp3

All of these had the distortion when I did the 'dd' command while the file was
playing.

This is a mass-update to all currently open Fedora Core 3 kernel bugs.

Fedora Core 3 support has transitioned to the Fedora Legacy project.
Due to the limited resources of this project, typically only
updates for new security issues are released.

As this bug isn't security related, it has been migrated to a
Fedora Core 4 bug. Please upgrade to this newer release, and
test if this bug is still present there.

This bug has been placed in NEEDINFO_REPORTER state.
Due to the large volume of inactive bugs in bugzilla, if this bug is
still in this state in two weeks time, it will be closed.

Should this bug still be relevant after this period, the reporter
can reopen the bug at any time. Any other users on the Cc: list
of this bug can request that the bug be reopened by adding a
comment to the bug.

Thank you.

This is a mass-update to all currently open kernel bugs.

A new kernel update has been released (Version: 2.6.15-1.1830_FC4)
based upon a new upstream kernel release.

Please retest against this new kernel, as a large number of patches
go into each upstream release, possibly including changes that
may address this problem.

If this bug is a problem preventing you from installing the
release this version is filed against, please see bug 169613.

Thank you.
