Description Laura Pardo 2019-01-31 15:40:27 UTC
An issue was discovered in elfutils 0.175. A segmentation fault can occur in the function elf64_xlatetom in libelf/elf32_xlatetom.c, due to dwfl_segment_report_module not checking whether the dyn data read from a core file is truncated. A crafted input can cause a program crash, leading to denial-of-service, as demonstrated by eu-stack.

Comment 2 Riccardo Schirone 2019-02-22 15:43:46 UTC
Created elfutils tracking bugs for this issue:

Affects: fedora-all [bug 1680044]

Comment 4 Mark Wielaard 2019-02-22 23:05:00 UTC
The title and description are slightly unfortunate since the issue doesn't have anything to do with the elf64_xlatetom function. That function just happens to be the function that accesses some undefined memory (indirectly through a memmove call).

A better description would be "eu-stack can crash when reading a corrupt or partial core file".

Comment 5 Dave Baker 2019-03-06 16:05:08 UTC
Flagging openshift-online-3 as NOTAFFECTED since binaries ship as part of RHEL.
