Thank you for the report. Modularisation or Xorg in being targeted for Fedora Core 5 release precisely for the above mentioned reasons. Kindly check the following mail for detail https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2005-August/msg00497.html We already have a bugzilla tracker for this enhancement. To expand upon what Rahul has mentioned above, you may be interested in the X.Org X11R7 modularization project: http://xorg.freedesktop.org/wiki/ModularizationProposal The upstream sources are basically being split from 1 massive tarball, into 250+ tarballs. Essentially every library, app, font family, the X servers, every video driver, etc. is all being split up into its own individual tarball, which can be built independantly against previously built and installed dependencies. Red Hat has been very active in the upstream modularization of X.Org, as have many others in the community, and we are very much looking forward to the release of the modularized X.Org X11R7 later this year. Work has already begun on the rpm packaging for X11R7 using the RC0 tarballs found at: http://xorg.freedesktop.org/X11R7.0-RC0 We have about 3/4 of it packaged in src.rpm format currently, and will be including the new modular X11R7 in Fedora development as soon as we've completed the packaging, and done a number of initial stabilizations to the resulting rpms, etc. Please subscribe to fedora-devel-list if you would like to keep in touch with the work we are doing on Xorg modularization. Hope this helps... TTYL |
