.Limited support for virtual machine snapshots Creating snapshots of virtual machines (VMs) is currently only supported for VMs not using the UEFI firmware. In addition, during the snapshot operation, the QEMU monitor may become blocked, which negatively impacts the hypervisor performance for certain workloads. Also note that the current mechanism of creating VM snapshots has been deprecated, and Red Hat does not recommend using VM snapshots in a production environment.

Chapter 4 Creating Virtual Machine Snapshots

Describe the issue:

We state the following which leads one to believe that no version of snapshots is actually working or supported:

For Internal Snapshots:

Important

Internal snapshots are not being actively developed, and Red Hat discourages their use.

For External Snapshots:

External snapshots work with any type of original disk image, can be taken with no virtual machine downtime, and are more stable and reliable. As such, external snapshots are recommended for use on KVM guest virtual machines. However, external snapshots are currently not fully implemented. A workaround is described on libvirt upstream pages.

Important

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 only supports creating snapshots while the guest virtual machine is paused or powered down. Creating snapshots of running guests (also known as live snapshots) is available on Red Hat Virtualization. For details, call your service representative.

Suggestions for improvement:

How about we state what works and is supported? Currently we discourage internal snapshots, recommend external but these can only be done while the guest is down which means no memory snapshot. We then state that RHV supports live snapshots however RHV does not yet support RHEL8??? This is causing customers extreme confusion as to what works and doesn't.

Additional information:

Some tested examples of these commands would be very helpful also.
