I cannot reproduce this (I did restart my user session though, installing into a currently-running plasma session will likely be problematic) OK, subsequent logins I see one plasmashell crash, but it restarts itself fine (and subsequent 'plasmashell --replace' invocations also ok). drkonqi backtrace: Thread 1 (Thread 0x7f1bae683d00 (LWP 2547)): [KCrash Handler] #6 0x00007f1bb24be43b in QObject::setProperty(char const*, QVariant const&) () at /lib64/libQt5Core.so.5 #7 0x00007f1b7926084a in () at /usr/lib64/qt5/qml/org/kde/plasma/private/notifications/libnotificationshelperplugin.so #8 0x00007f1b79261710 in () at /usr/lib64/qt5/qml/org/kde/plasma/private/notifications/libnotificationshelperplugin.so #9 0x00007f1b7925b85b in () at /usr/lib64/qt5/qml/org/kde/plasma/private/notifications/libnotificationshelperplugin.so #10 0x00007f1b7925c233 in () at /usr/lib64/qt5/qml/org/kde/plasma/private/notifications/libnotificationshelperplugin.so #11 0x00007f1bb3cb95b5 in QQmlObjectOrGadget::metacall(QMetaObject::Call, int, void**) const () at /lib64/libQt5Qml.so.5 #12 0x00007f1bb3ba909d in CallMethod(QQmlObjectOrGadget const&, int, int, int, int*, QV4::ExecutionEngine*, QV4::CallData*, QMetaObject::Call) () at /lib64/libQt5Qml.so.5 #13 0x00007f1bb3bab4d4 in CallPrecise(QQmlObjectOrGadget const&, QQmlPropertyData const&, QV4::ExecutionEngine*, QV4::CallData*, QMetaObject::Call) () at /lib64/libQt5Qml.so.5 #14 0x00007f1bb3bac2ce in QV4::QObjectMethod::callInternal(QV4::Value const*, QV4::Value const*, int) const () at /lib64/libQt5Qml.so.5 #15 0x00007f1bb3c38b46 in QV4::Runtime::method_callPropertyLookup(QV4::ExecutionEngine*, QV4::Value*, unsigned int, QV4::Value*, int) () at /lib64/libQt5Qml.so.5 #16 0x00007f1b758eca31 in () #17 0x0000000000000000 in () I rebooted twice and had the same issues. When using chrome, plasma stopped and restarted about 10 times in the span of 1 hour. Finally, it just went completely black screen and wouldn't restart, so I had to reboot to recover. As I mentioned above I backed out the changes and everything has been working normally - so there is something definitely wrong with the update. Possible you can get a backtrace or drkonqi report to compare with what I'm seeing? (In reply to Jan Grulich from comment #6) > One solution might be to update to Plasma 5.16.5, which I think we should do > anyway as 5.15.x is a bit outdated. Please advise here when ready and I'll test. Right now I am --exclude plasma-integration to keep the above updates from automatically applying - looks like it has already been pushed to stable. Qt 5.12.5 was pushed to stable only on F31, the F30 update is still stuck in testing. (That said, considering that the included QtWebEngine update fixes 41 security issues, I think we also cannot sit on the update forever.) yeah, you're correct... I saw all the emails from bodhi come across and missed the fact it was for 31. Should be fixed before pushing to stable though, if it were a little thing ok, but having plasma continuously recycle itself is a big deal. Reiterating my request for someone experiencing this to provide a backtrace Provide me with detailed instructions on what to do and I'll do it. For me, this is easily reproducible by using chrome to download files from the web. Happens just about every time. For what I posted, drkomki crahs handler caught it. I'd expect abrt could too. Otherwise, running plasmashell directly from gdb should work too. (Pardon my brevity atm, posted from my phone) No problem, I'll give it a shot...Thanks! Created attachment 1622950 [details]
backtrace upon intial login - plasma crashes
Plasma crashed upon initial login. Let me know if this helps or if you need additional backtraces.
OK, your crash there matches mine. Unfortunately, I'm unable to reproduce any crash downloading files using chrome. Anyone else experiencing crashes, please detail the circumstances under which it happens. To re-iterate crash conditions reported so far here: 1. plasmashell crashes upon first login or resuming from sleep. backtrace provided 2. (others) crash downloading files using chrome (no backtrace, not reproducible, yet) Hrm, I just experienced multiple crashes simply unlocking screen, now getting back screen too. :( Happens repeatedly this time too :( Running under gdb *appears* to be the same kind of crash as 1. Any others? It crashes when you receive a notification, which is also when you log in and connect to a network or when the plasma-pk updates report its status. I was able to reproduce the crash, but I thought it was caused by some library mismatch or so, because I usually compile lots of stuff myself and the crash is gone with Plasma 5.16.5 after upgrade to Fedora 31. I checked the code and at first look I was not able to see why it crashes and it's weird it happens after Qt update. Yep... I get a notification when a download is completed. At that time, the screen flashes black as plasma restarts - then all is good until the next notification message. Eventually however, as I mentioned above it won't restart. Not sure how to do the gdb trace for this - my instructions say to wait until the crash happens then run gdb - but since it recycles how do I catch it? Might be academic at this point however since we know how to reproduce at will. Dr Konqi report of crash after restarting plasma
Next i run `kstart5 plasmashell` in KRunner, another crash happened and Dr Konqi popped up.
From discussion on #plasma channel on irc this seems to be a regression in qtdeclarative. We might want to revert this change: https://github.com/qt/qtdeclarative/commit/f806d64249c6e961ab12270d3a045e9980e19cf4#diff-25d902c24283ab8cfbac54dfa101ad31 Thanks Jan! change committed, https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/qt5-qtdeclarative/c/a438d8b4e34dba5ff4e1fe3bd1db87dacd54056e?branch=master builds underway. *** Bug 1759265 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** Initial testing unsuccessful using: $ rpm -q qt5-qtdeclarative qt5-qtdeclarative-5.12.5-2.fc30.x86_64 tested 2 ways: 1. existing session running: kdialog --passivepopup "foo" 2. reboot, login to fresh session. Both still crash the same for me. Anyone know if anything's been filed @ bugreports.qtproject.io yet? If not, I can try over the next day or 2. Let's first verify it's an issue in qtdeclarative, below is a build of previous version of qt5-qtdeclarative (5.12.4), pretending it's the new one, I just used older tarball. Can anyone try to install it and tell us if it makes any difference? I think this update should request Fedora 31 freeze exception, because Fedora 31 Final KDE Live will crash without it.

It will not, because it uses Plasma 5.16 and there the notification applet is completely rewritten and the crash is not happening there. analitza-19.04.2-3.fc30, appmenu-qt5-0.3.0+16.10.20160628.1-17.fc30, aqbanking-5.8.2-1.fc30, deepin-editor-1.2.6.3-6.fc30, deepin-file-manager-4.7.7-5.fc30, deepin-kwin-0.0.4-4.fc30, deepin-launcher-4.6.6-5.fc30, deepin-qt-dbus-factory-1.1.0-5.fc30, deepin-qt5dxcb-plugin-1.2.0-4.fc30, deepin-qt5integration-0.3.10-4.fc30, dnscrypt-proxy-gui-1.21.16-7.fc30, dtkwidget-2.0.16.1-2.fc30, dtkwm-2.0.11-2.fc30, fcitx-qt5-1.2.3-9.fc30, gammaray-2.11.0-2.fc30, gcin-2.8.6-6.fc30, hedgewars-0.9.25-7.fc30, kf5-akonadi-server-19.04.2-3.fc30, kf5-frameworkintegration-5.59.0-3.fc30, kf5-kdeclarative-5.59.0-3.fc30, kf5-kwayland-5.59.0-3.fc30, kf5-kxmlgui-5.59.0-3.fc30, kmymoney-5.0.6-1.fc30, kwin-5.15.5-3.fc30, libfm-qt-0.14.1-4.fc30, libqtxdg-3.3.1-4.fc30, lumina-desktop-1.5.0-2.fc30, lxqt-qtplugin-0.14.0-5.fc30, mscore-2.2.1-12.fc30, plasma-integration-5.15.5-3.fc30, pyotherside-1.5.8-3.fc30, python-pyside2-5.12.5-1.fc30.1, python-qt5-5.12.3-6.fc30, qgis-3.4.9-3.fc30, qgnomeplatform-0.5-11.fc30, qstardict-1.3-12.fc30, qt-creator-4.9.2-2.fc30, qt5-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qt3d-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtbase-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtcanvas3d-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtcharts-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtconnectivity-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtdatavis3d-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtdeclarative-5.12.5-3.fc30, qt5-qtdoc-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtenginio-1.6.2-26.fc30, qt5-qtgamepad-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtgraphicaleffects-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtimageformats-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtlocation-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtmultimedia-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtnetworkauth-5.12.5-2.fc30, qt5-qtquickcontrols-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtquickcontrols2-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtremoteobjects-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtscript-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtscxml-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtsensors-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtserialbus-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtserialport-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtspeech-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtstyleplugins-5.0.0-36.fc30, qt5-qtsvg-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qttools-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qttranslations-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtvirtualkeyboard-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtwayland-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtwebchannel-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtwebengine-5.12.5-2.fc30, qt5-qtwebkit-5.212.0-0.37.alpha2.fc30, qt5-qtwebsockets-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtwebview-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtx11extras-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5-qtxmlpatterns-5.12.5-1.fc30, qt5ct-0.38-5.fc30, qtcurve-1.9.1-7.fc30, skrooge-2.20.0-3.fc30, texmaker-5.0.3-5.fc30, ugene-1.31.1-6.fc30, xdg-desktop-portal-kde-5.15.5-4.fc30, yarock-1.4.0-4.fc30, yubioath-desktop-5.0.0-2.git121efe3.fc30 has been pushed to the Fedora 30 testing repository.
