Description Simon Gerhards 2019-11-13 08:12:58 UTC
Description of problem:
When I open an hdf5 file with HDFView it looks as if it was empty.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
2.14-4.fc31

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open an hdf5 file, e.g. from https://support.hdfgroup.org/ftp/HDF5/examples/files/exbyapi/
2. Look at the file structure

Actual results:
File seems empty.

Expected results:
File contents are displayed.

It seems like the problem has been fixed in newer 3.x hdfview releases [0], not sure if it has been backported to 2.14 though...

I can confirm that opening 'h5ex_d_alloc.h5' [0] using hdhview 3.1.0 installed from official HDF Group builds (HDFView-3.1.0-centos7_64.tar.gz) [1] works ok on RHEL 7 and Fedora 31.

Unfortunately, updating to the new release is not trivial. Please see 1797361.

OK, I see.

As the package is pretty useless in its current state, perhaps it would be better to retire it?

Comment 5 Ankur Sinha (FranciscoD) 2020-02-23 12:13:24 UTC
If we can't fix it, it'll get retired automatically.

Here's what needs to be done:

- the new version requires netcdf-java which isn't in Fedora at the moment
- netcdf-java uses gradle to build, but gradle isn't in Fedora at the moment
- gradle is a mammoth task to build: it uses groovy and koitlin etc. a discussion on the devel list suggests that this is not currently manageable: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/RUMUORRTAGTYXUZXZYS23562Q55EHXDM/#57RTE4UGO7LUI7RY7QFKENP7HRUNLZZU
- so, the alternative is to manually write maven pom files for netcdf-java from the gradle build scripts so that it can be built using maven (in general, this is the suggestion for anything that uses gradle).

So, we simply need some time to do the work, but none of us seem to have the required free time to do it at the moment. We're busy fixing the other FTBFS bugs for the Fedora 32 release. Maybe when that's been done, we'll be able to give this task the time it needs.

- note: it *may* be possible to carry a bundled version of netcdf-java temporarily, but we'll have to discuss whether this can be done. (the guidelines no longer forbid bundling)

Help is always welcome, if anyone else wants to give it a go.

Cheers,

This package has changed maintainer in the Fedora.
Reassigning to the new maintainer of this component.

Comment 7 Ben Cotton 2020-11-03 15:48:35 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 31 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 31 on 2020-11-24.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
Fedora 'version' of '31'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 31 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 8 Ben Cotton 2020-11-24 16:07:51 UTC
Fedora 31 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2020-11-24. Fedora 31 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
