As you can see, the wireless card is coming up as eth0. The wired card comes up
as eth1, but I've disabled it at the moment as I've no network to connect to.
Anything else I can do?

ok.. can you open up.. /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 Make sure mode is set to something like. MODE=Managed or MODE=Ad-Hoc Make sure that there is strange characters or incorrect spelling. So it was working in MODE=Auto before the test began.
It then worked in MODE=Managed, but not in MODE=Ad-Hoc (makes sense as it's a
managed router connection.
After I tried Ad-Hoc and changed it back to Auto, it wouldn't work.
Changing back to MODE=Managed and everything is working again.
The messages for "service network restart" appear to be wrong for each time that
the service starts up and works however.
Anything else I can provide to help track this down?

These bugs are being closed since a large number of updates have been released after the FC5 test1 and test2 releases. Kindly update your system by running yum update as root user or try out the third and final test version of FC5 being released in a short while and verify if the bugs are still present on the system .Reopen or file new bug reports as appropriate after confirming the presence of this issue. Thanks Confirm that this bug has been tested with the latest yum updates and the problem still exists. Upgraded to Fedora Core 5 test 3 via downloaded DVD.
Find that the RJ45 and Wireless interfaces have now swapped round so that eth0
is wired and eth1 is wireless.
Restarting network now gives different message, but service IS still working.

OK, Had to completely re-install the laptop from scratch due to the networking becoming completely unusable. Have now formatted the drive and installed FC5t3 from the DVD. eth0, eth1 and wifi0 now show up in Network Configuration, but both eth0 and eth1 are displayed as wired interfaces. I can configure eth1 to pick up a DHCP address, but eth0 is missing the Wireless tab to enable me to configure it properly. Where do I go from here? Duncan Created attachment 125236 [details]
ifcfg-eth0 script
After first boot of fresh FC5t3 install, this script was flagged as
TYPE=Ethernet so Network Configuration GUI screen couldn't configure the
wireless parts.
I changed this entry to TYPE=Wireless and was then able to configure using the
Network Configuration GUI. Won't find an IP address via DHCP though!

Did a format and re-install of FC5t3 from DVD over the weekend, but left Xen
OFF the list this time to test another bug.
The world of woe into which I had descended with the networking seems to have
vanished.
I'm now back to the stage that the network interface works.
I think the only issue I have now is that the interface fails to start up on
boot. The message during boot is something about MAC address not being the
same. What it is not the same as I am not sure.
Once booted and logged in, however, the interface will come up reasonably
cleanly with a `service network restart`.
I say reasonably as there are still some messeges as shown below:

The service status is [ OK ] though - which is better than the failed of
before.
The final "new" bit of information I have at the moment is that the interface is crashing sometimes. Not sure exactly what it is related to, but it's only happened when I've been rsync'ing my music and videos over the wireless. Both times I've been ssh'd into my desktop machine and running evolution on the display on my laptop. The evolution will freeze completely and the network will be completely unresponsive. No amount of 'service network restart' will work, and a shutdown will fail with the screen blacked out and no status lights flashing. I have to power down the laptop and re-boot it to get networking running again. I've checked it's not the router as there is one other wireless device connected at this time without any problems. Could there be an issue with the device after a certain amount of data has been transferred? Duncan Hmm, could you open a new bug against component "kernel" and describe the crashing? This is a kernel driver bug. I'd forgotten about this bug. I'm currently using the laptop with great success under FC5 final. There ARE some niggling network issues, but not really related to this crashing. Would it be better to close this bug as times have moved on somewhat from FC5T3? Please retest against this new kernel, as a large number of patches go into each upstream release, possibly including changes that may address this problem. Unfortunately, the only Thinkpad T40 I have has been used for FC6 testing and now runs FC6 final. I don't recall there being any error recently. I still get wireless errors after a period of use on the secured work network, but I'll submit a new bug under FC6 if I find this necessary (not sure whether it's the WAP I'm connecting to at the moment) Please close the bug - I'll not put a resolution on it as I don't know how to clasify this. Fedora Core 5 seems to want to put things the other way around for some reason.
